The Central Lincoln County YMCA is accepting applications for families in need of gifts this holiday season. Those in need may pick up an application from the CLC YMCA, local schools, churches, and town offices. The simple, confidential application form should be returned by the CLC Y, located at 525 Main St. in Damariscotta, by Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Those who served in the U. S. military or are the widow or dependent of a veteran may be entitled to benefits. Maine has a variety of benefits available to qualifying veterans and dependents in addition to those offered by the federal government.

Nature Notes Climate change and rising waters

Rising waters are usually followed by an eroding sand beach. This is the case at the eastern Maryland and Virginia coasts. More specifically, Wallops Island and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia, and the Assateague Island National Seashore, off the coast of Maryland, are the present cases with sand beaches.

Gingerbread Spectacular Coming Up In Boothbay Harbor

As families push back from the Thanksgiving table this month, others in the Midcoast will begin designing and baking their entries for Boothbay Harbor’s magical Gingerbread Spectacular. This December marks the 10th annual Gingerbread Spectacular at the historic Opera House at Boothbay Harbor, and from early scouting reports, it sounds like it may be the best one yet.

The Damariscotta River Association is offering the opportunity for kids to roam outdoors, explore nature, and play games at its winter vacation camps during teacher workshop days and February vacation this coming winter and spring.

‘Try the Y For Free’ Membership Campaign

Starting Monday, Nov. 28, the Central Lincoln County YMCA will begin a new membership campaign titled “Try the Y for Free while Supporting the Giving Tree Community Event.” The campaign will run through Friday, Dec. 9.

Sally Cartwright Nov. 25, 1923 - Nov. 15, 2016

Years before her death on Nov. 15, Sally Cartwright, of Tenants Harbor, wrote that someday, she would “rust out.” She lost her keen awareness over time, but not her sense of humor, or her kind smile, or the sparkle of the sea in her blue eyes.

Oxbow Offers Rare Bottle Pours at Newcastle Tasting Room

Oxbow Brewing Company, the farmhouse brewery located in Newcastle, will kick off the holiday season by offering special bottle pours at its Newcastle tasting room on Saturday, Nov. 26. Customers will be able to sample rare bottles no longer available for sale such as Momoko, Goods from the Woods, Funkhaus, and vintage Crossfade.
