Many gravestones in Hillside Cemetery are missing important information, including birth and death dates, full names, and veteran information. The Damariscotta Cemetery Trustees are asking the public for help to fill in the blanks, especially in the Norris Yard portion of Hillside. This is the area bordering Church Street and up the hill along the west side of Hillside Lane.

Micah Pexa, of Hawaii, is hiking the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine this year along with more than 3,700 other hikers. He hopes to be one of the approximately 25 percent of hikers who complete the trail. Fortunately, he has extra motivation. Pexa is hiking the Appalachian Trail to combat human trafficking in Northern Thailand and to raise money for Boothbay-based Friends of Thai Daughters.

The Free Clothing Closet in Waldoboro is looking for volunteers. The Free Clothing Closet sorts clothes every Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Lincoln County Gleaners group had a banner first year by gleaning and distributing almost 6,000 pounds of fresh, local food from five local farms, and it is looking to recruit more volunteers for the coming season.

Anyone planning a litter cleanup on Earth Day, April 22 is invited to share the fruits of their labor with a new Lincoln County group of volunteers trying to get single-use plastics – “S.U.P.” — out of the streams, estuaries, rivers, lakes, fields, and roadsides. A new volunteer group called kNOw S.U.P., which aims to drastically reduce people’s reliance on single-use plastics, is requesting all organizations planning beach cleanups this April to make a list of the five most common plastic items they find. Will it be bottles, straws, or the single-use plastic bag?

A much-anticipated event in Damariscotta will have a new name and many new additions. Formerly the Damariscotta Pirate Rendezvous, the event has expanded into a new title and mission: Pirate Rendezvous and Seafarers Celebration, set for Saturday, June 23 in Damariscotta. 

Residents of Whitefield are being asked to do their part to keep plastics from being dumped into the landfill due to changes in national importing policies. Last spring, China announced it would no longer import 24 types of paper and plastics that previously had been recycled.
