Art and hobnobbing at the Grill: Last week, I stopped by the Wednesday opening reception at Damariscotta River Grill for the new art show there, featuring the work of 16 local artists in the Pemaquid Group of Artists.
Local Theater Students Win National Award in Atlanta
Students from the Boothbay Region YMCA Y-Arts program won a Freddie G. Outstanding Production award and students Rick Hilscher and Jackie McLoon won a Freddie G. award for Outstanding Student Direction and Choreography at the 2018 Junior Theater Festival Atlanta, which took place Jan. 12-14 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. The Junior Theater Festival Atlanta united 6,000-plus students and educators from 130 educational musical theater groups representing 30 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
Heartwood Presents ‘Wiley and the Hairy Man’
More than 30 third- through eighth-grade students from 10 Midcoast schools and home-schools, are spending their January afternoons rehearsing in the Parker B. Poe Theater at Lincoln Academy, in Heartwood Regional Theater Company’s fifth annual winter middle school production, “Wiley and the Hairy Man.”
DaPonte’s ‘Stroll in the Prater’ Concerts Coming Up
The DaPonte String Quartet’s second series of the season takes listeners on a stroll through Vienna, home to the world’s oldest amusement park, the Prater, in company with some of the Austrian capital’s most powerful musical prodigies, Joseph Haydn, Alban Berg, and Ludwig van Beethoven. “A Stroll in the Prater” will have five performances, from March 18-25, in Damariscotta, Portland, Rockport, Boothbay Harbor, and Brunswick.

Catching up with Lincoln Theater: I was having lunch the other day at King Eider’s Pub in Damariscotta with a couple of my LCN co-workers and had the pleasure of running into Lincoln Theater Executive Director Andrew Fenniman there as I was leaving. We started chatting about what’s going on at the theater, a conversation that needed more time than I had (since I had to get back to the workplace), so I asked him to please lay it out for me in an email.

One can learn how one can help children in Lincoln County become more resilient by attending a free community film viewing of “Resilience: The Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope.” The film will be shown on Monday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Boothbay Region YMCA and on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Wavus Camp in Jefferson.
Boneheads, Holy Mackerels in Season Opener at Opera House
The combined musical talents of The Boneheads and The Holy Mackerels will open up the 2018 season at the historic Opera House at Boothbay Harbor. On Saturday, Jan. 27, the music will start at 7 p.m. and the good times are promised to begin as soon as the doors swing open.

Pemaquid Artists Featured at New Damariscotta Restaurant Show
The walls of the Damariscotta River Grill brighten the dreary days of winter, showcasing a variety of artists, subjects, styles, and mediums.The restaurant’s Art at the Grill series is currently hosting 16 members of the Pemaquid Group of Artists from Tuesday, Jan. 23 through Tuesday, March 13. An opening reception on Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 4-5:30 p.m. to meet the artists while savoring Chef Rick Hirsch’s delicious hors d’oeuvres.
French Feast and a Movie at Harbor Theater
Celebrate the end of January on Thursday, Jan. 25, with a French feast at Harbor Theater, starting at 6:30 p.m. Local chefs will provide French cheese and pate, eclairs, macaroons, and other French delicacies, and Harbor Theater will serve free red wine and coffee to go with the feature film, “Paris Can Wait,” showing at 7 p.m.
