Anyone venturing into the woods can benefit from learning to navigate comfortably with a map and compass. On Saturday, April 28, Damariscotta River Association will offer a workshop on basic map and compass navigation and skills for “staying found,” as opposed to getting lost. Participants will learn how to read a USCGS topographical map and how to use a handheld compass. In addition, the class will cover declination, and how to obtain a bearing from the map and convert it to magnetic from true north.

The DaPonte String Quartet is accepting applications to its annual three-day quartet workshop for high school string players at Camp Kieve’s Wavus campus in Jefferson in September.

On Saturday, June 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Midcoast Conservancy will host its annual Hooked on Fishing event, where kids get out on the water and experience the fun of fishing. Children of all experience levels are welcome; each child get an hour of fishing in prime fishing spots on Damariscotta Lake with experienced volunteer boaters as their personal guides. Mentors will be onshore to assist young anglers with equipment and to answer their questions about fishing. 

Paul Bryant, boat builder and designer, and owner of Riverside Boat Co., will speak Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in the Newcastle fire station community room.

The Garden Club of Wiscasset’s annual plant sale will take place on Saturday, May 12 at the Wiscasset Municipal Building, at 51 Bath Road in Wiscasset, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Scientific reports suggest that spending time in nature is good for people. Taking a walk in a natural setting promotes relaxation, reflection, and self-awareness. Spending time in nature with others promotes a sense of connection and community. Scientific studies confirm what many people already know to be true in their bodies and minds. Midcoast Mainers live in a beautiful corner of the world, and the coast, forests and fields of the region provide ample opportunities for recreation, exploration, and appreciation.

The final seasonal Simply Supper free community meal will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17 at the Bremen Union Church, 523 Waldoboro Road, Bremen. Planning this event will be chairpersons Christine Duffy and Gordon Eisleib, both of Damariscotta. The congregation is busy offering help for the meal, which will include assorted pizzas, several salads, bread and/or chips, a beverage, and assorted homemade desserts.

When it comes time to open the Waldoborough Historical Society’s museum for the summer, the trustees are always looking for exhibits that will be of interest to visitors. In reality, while artifacts donated are old and from past times in the village, theses same pieces become new for visitors.
