As evidenced by a few 90-degree day reminders, summer does not officially end for another few weeks. However, with the passing of Labor Day and the restarting of area schools, it does feel as though we’re transitioning from one season into the next.
Past and Present Remembering Ernie Pyle
Pulitzer Prize-winner Ernie Pyle was one of many American war correspondents during World War II, but he was easily the most famous because of what he wrote and how he wrote it. His columns were syndicated across the country and brought home the tragedy of war and those who fought and died in it in a way that no other reporter did.
Thrifty Good Food Hanging on to Summer
Our current spate of sunny warm days is easy to appreciate after a soggy August. My rosebushes are coming into their second bloom and the red stands out against the 6-foot hydrangeas with their scattered bright blue flower heads. Even the eggplant finally proudly displays a veritable crop of white and purple striped fruit.
Characters of the County: The Trusted Voice of Don Carrigan
When Don Carrigan isn’t landscaping or working in the garden of his home in Walpole where he lives with his wife, Donna, he’s maintaining the trust he’s built with Maine communities over a 50-year career on the airwaves as one of the state’s most beloved media figures.
Thistles & Things
Kids go to school to educate their minds. At Kieve and Wavus, we also nurture their hearts.
Art, Actually
Lincoln County is home to dozens of galleries, several world class theaters, and all sorts of venues in between. I look forward to getting to know the people and places of the local art scene.
MOMENT OF CLARITY
It’s a moment that comes several times in various ways over the course of a life. It’s that first crisis after you leave home, and the first time you realize what it means to work without a net.
Damariscotta History Bygone Memories of Three Restaurants
We are almost through the month of August. As I sit here at my desk, the sun is shining brightly and the sky is full of white fluffy clouds and the hummingbird feeder has a large number of hummingbirds coming and going. I have now filled their feeder 16 times with sweet sugar water.
Characters of the County: Allison Brooks Pays it Forward
Allison Brooks has seen the world and found the value of home in Jefferson, where she now invests in the future with some motivation from an act of kindness by another in her past.
Putting the Y in Community
This past week your Y hosted several events to support youth!
What’s at The Waldo?
We can hardly believe it ourselves, but this September we are welcoming a pair of true musical legends to The Waldo: Judy Collins and Roger McGuinn. Whether you lived through the 1960s or just wish you had, you’ve undoubtedly heard their music and felt their influence in the work of others.
Thrifty Good Food Fresh Summer Flavors
Our rainy summer has yielded amazingly green lawns this August, lush gardens well populated with slugs, and bountiful crops of kale and Swiss chard. Sadly, corn, tomatoes, and even peppers and summer squash have lacked the usual heat of summer and are late in ripening.
RING OUT
A change is in the air for Lincoln Academy’s skyline. The famed bell tower, dating back to the 1850s when it was first installed, will soon be temporarily removed.
Characters of the County: Jan Goranson’s Fields of Experience
The residents of Lincoln County are connected to the powerful, living landscapes of the area simply by residing in them, whether on the jagged shores of Bristol or the elevated fields of Newcastle. However, there are few who feel that bond with the earth more than Jan Goranson does to the farmlands in Dresden.
