During the last two decades, the world of genetic engineering has become cheaper and easier, resulting in huge increases in our knowledge about the ways in which genomes work. This has allowed scientists to do incredible things like mass producing human insulin and modifying drugs to be safer and have longer shelf lives. Senior Research Scientist José A. Fernández-Robledo has been interested in the world of genetic engineering due to his work with oysters, specifically oyster parasites that affect aquaculture production. Join him for Café Sci on August 15 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to discuss the importance of genetic engineering, its ability to enhance oyster aquaculture production, and its potential to help us protect our wild places. This fun, free event is open to the public and will be held at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in East Boothbay, Maine. Learn more and register at www.bigelow.org/cafesci.

Join Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta in welcoming Linda Porter to sign copies of her book, Angus Tapangus from Kangamangus, a Good, GOOD Boy.
About the book:
It is the story of a Maine puppy, who knows that he is a good boy, in fact, he is a good GOOD boy. What he wants more than anything in the whole world is family of his own to tell him this very thing. When people come to the farm he was born on, to pick up a puppy, he overhears how he is “just too large”; he has no idea what that means, and being the last of the litter, goes off to find his own forever family. He knows it will be a family with a little boy or girl, and that they will have a fireplace. He doesn’t exactly know what a fireplace is, but he has heard of them and they sound wonderful.
He sets off and stows away on his friend “Capt Dan’s” boat, and from there has a few cool adventures and meets some extraordinary people.
