The name Cantrip is an Old Scots word meaning a charm, magic spell or piece of mischief and it aptly describes the unexpected twists and turns in their musical arrangements, likewise the compelling potency
of their musicianship. Swirling border pipes, raging fiddle, thunderous guitar and three rich voices blend to create a sound energetic enough to tear the roof off. After 20 years of touring, Cantrip has found a character like no other. Echoes can be heard of trad music from the 1960s and 70s, but the years have slowly infested
their music with the sounds of funk, metal, bluegrass, swing, and even klezmer. Dan Houghton, Jon Bews and Eric McDonald stir the elements in a witches’ cauldron, slowly coalescing into chaotic order.

Sept 4: OldHat String Band
OldHat Stringband (https://oldhatstringband.com) is based out of Eliot, Maine. Fusing tight vocal harmonies with a lively rhythm section, OldHat creates a sound that draws from bluegrass, old time, folk, and country traditions. Whitney Roy’s (Guitar, Vocals) lilting vocals provide the backbone of OldHat’s vocal blend, while her solid rhythm guitar anchors the bands rhythm section. Steve Roy (Mandolin, Fiddle, Vocals) is one of New England’s premier multi-instrumentalists, and has performed and toured with many of the
acoustic world’s top acts. Amanda Kowalski (Bass) is one of the more sought after bass players in the worlds of bluegrass and old time music, and her rhythmic drive and energy on stage are second to none.

The Jacob Jolliff Band is the next generation of bluegrass supergroups, led by one of the country’s premier contemporary bluegrass mandolinists. Before joining Yonder Mountain String Band, Jacob Jolliff founded beloved New England roots band Joy Kills Sorrow, while attending Berklee School of Music on a full scholarship. In 2012, Jolliff had the distinctive honor of being named the National Mandolin Championship winner. A fixture of the national bluegrass community, he has collaborated and shared the stage with Darol Anger, Sam Bush, Ronnie McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Chris Thile, and David Grisman to name a few. When Joy Kills Sorrow disbanded in 2014, Jolliff got the call to join Yonder Mountain String Band, in which he
was a member until 2020.
The Jacob Jolliff Band is a rotating quartet of some of the most.virtuosic and innovative young acoustic pickers in the country, including Alex Hargreaves, on fiddle. Considered one of best improvising violinists in the world, Hargreaves is the winner of The Grand Masters Fiddle Championship and a regular member of Chris Thile’s Live From Here band. Other members of the JJB include Stash Wyslouch on guitar (The Deadly Gentleman, The Stash! Band, and Molsky’s Mountain Drifters) and bassists Myles Sloniker and Max Johnson (Sarah Jarosz, Ricky Skaggs). The specific band lineup changes and is subject to availability.
