Sheepscot Chorus invites you to concerts featuring the beloved Mozart Requiem on Saturday, April 27 at 3:00 PM, and Sunday, April 28 at 3:00 PM at the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle. The Chorus will perform this ever-popular work under the direction of Linda Blanchard, and accompanied by organist Sean Fleming and a professional 24-piece orchestra. The concerts will feature the well-known soloists Mary Sullivan, soprano, Joëlle Morris, mezzo-soprano, David Myers-Wakeman,
tenor, and John David Adams, bass.
One of the enduring masterpieces of classical literature, the Requiem was Mozart’s final and perhaps greatest work. Commissioned anonymously, the Requiem remained unfinished at the time of Mozart’s untimely death, adding an aura of mystery and intrigue to its composition. Yet, despite its incomplete state, the Requiem is a testament to Mozart’s genius, showcasing his unparalleled ability to blend rich harmonies with poignant melodies.
Shorter favorites will also be featured on the program, including two by Eric Whitacre; the humorous “Animal Crackers, Vol. 1,” and the stunning “The Seal Lullaby.” Performances by the Chorus’ 2024 student music award winners will also be featured. The concerts will close with the toe-tapping gospel-style number “Walk Him Up the Stairs” from the musical “Purlie.” For more information, visit facebook.com/sheepscotchorus and sheepscotvalleychorus.org, email info@sheepscotvalleychorus.org, or call 207-548-3632. Tickets are available at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta and Boothbay Harbor, Treats in Wiscasset, and online at sheepscotvalleychorus.org/tickets.

Tribute to Earl Scruggs. “Tony Trischka is known as the father of modern bluegrass” says the New York Times. He is considered the consummate banjo artist and perhaps the most influential banjo player in the roots music world. For more than 50 years, his stylings have inspired a whole generation of bluegrass and acoustic musicians with the many voices he has brought to the instrument. Tonight Tony will be honoring the music of Earl Scruggs, pioneer of the three-finger banjo style and one of the most important musicians in bluegrass, or, in Tony’s opinion, in any genre. Trischka recently came into possession of extremely rare recordings of jam sessions with Scruggs and John Hartford, and he’s transcribed and recorded Scruggs’s note-for-note solos from a number of these. Many songs that Earl had never recorded. Together with his ace band—Michael Daves on vocals
and guitar, fiddler Alex Hargreaves and bassist Jared Engel— they will trace the story of Scruggs from his childhood to his final years.
Advance discount tickets $25, available only from the box office at 207-633-5159 (open Wed – Fri from 10-2). Regular tickets $30 online at boothbayoperahouse.com, and on the day of show if available.

Join us for a free community walk as part of the global Jane’s Walk program on Saturday, May 4, in Waldoboro. The walk takes place twice, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., at the Sylvania/Hoffses House site in Waldoboro. The tour will last no longer than 90 minutes and begins at 467 Friendship Road in Waldoboro.
How does history help us imagine new beginnings in Waldoboro? Join us for a walk around the abandoned Sylvania factory lot, adjacent Hoffses House, and the woods and river that border them.
We’ll consider how this particular spot in town helped support economies of farming, fishing, and shipbuilding, as well as how it saw power struggles play out between Protestant sects, proslavery and antislavery factions in America, England and America at large, and the area’s native inhabitants and its earliest colonial settlers.
It all happened in this one place, whether a violent confrontation with the indigenous peoples, a visit by President John Adams, or slaves escaping from the South. Here lived working class families next to professional and governmental elites. A farm abutted a country estate. Worry over land and money neighbored the town’s Fourth of July recreation. The proximity of difference accentuated political division but also political change. Industry diverged and converged (around shoes!—over 150 years apart). And while the people polluted the land, they also stewarded it.
We’ll follow their lives and feelings as they cross and converge in this one space of time. Wear comfortable footwear for a walk in the woods.

Barnstar! began as the brainchild of Zachariah Hickman (bassist for Josh Ritter, musical director for Ray Lamontagne) for a local bluegrass supergroup featuring some of Boston’s best musicians and songwriters. Using the familiar tools of the genre—guitar (Mark Erelli), fiddle (Jake Armerding), mandolin (Taylor Armerding) and banjo (Charlie Rose)—Barnstar! Has forged its own brand of song- based bluegrass, gloriously harmonized and raucously played. The band debuted in 2011 with C’mon!, a mix of distinctive originals and unexpected covers (Neil Young, Dawes, The Traveling Wilburys) cut live in the studio. Despite juggling various high-profile sideman gigs behind other artists, the lads in Barnstar! managed to cause quite a stir with relatively few appearances. Whether playing above 10,000 feet in the Colorado mountains, dressing up like pirates on a boat
cruising around Boston Harbor, or starting a small skirmish over the last CD in Shrewsbury, England – shouts of “C’mon!” followed the band everywhere they went, and still do. Advance discount tickets $25, available only from the box office at 207-633-5159 (open Wed –Fri from 10-2). Regular tickets $30 online at boothbayoperahouse.com, and on the day of show if available.
