The Vienna Piano Trio was one of the most noted ensembles of its type to emerge in the last decade of the 20th century. The group first obtained coaching from two of the world’s great trio ensembles, the Beaux Arts Trio and the Haydn Trio Wein. Individually and as a group, they intensively studied chamber music interpretation with such great chamber performers as Issac Stern, Jaime Laredo, Ralph Kirschbaum, and the members of the Guarnieri and LaSalle quartets. The group made debut appearances in 1989 and since then the Vienna Piano Trio has won numerous international competition prizes. Its London debut was in 1994 at Wigmore Hall, followed by further appearances in the United States in Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall. The trio is particularly successful in repertory by composers closely associated with Austria, including Brahms, Schubert, Haydn and Dvorak. The Trio’s playing exhibits the traditional Viennese sentimentality and is alert to the nuances of the folk music traditions that appear in the works of all these composers. It has toured extensively in northern Europe, Britain, Italy, South Africa, and the United States. The Opera House is honored to welcome this internationally acclaimed trio to our stage

Over the course of 25 years and ten albums, the Subdudes have quietly become one of America’s national music treasures. The New Orleans-formed group is a living encapsulation of American music, a vibrant cauldron of sounds that stirs together meaty grooves and jazzy dynamics, soulful R&B swagger, easy vocal harmonies, cheeky rock ‘n’ roll attitude and folky social consciousness — not to mention some of the sharpest musicianship and ensemble playing you’ll ever hear from any five musicians. Led by singer/guitarist Tommy Malone and accordionist, John Magnie, The Subdudes draw most of their inspiration from the sounds of their native New Orleans, blending blues, gospel, funk, and R&B with their own harmony vocals; their sound is also notable for the band’s substitution of a tambourine player, Steve Amedée, for a drummer. Tim Cook rounds out the band on bass. It’s been more than a few years since these guys have graced the Opera House stage and we look forward to their return this summer.
