PART ! – This film chronicles the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history, when a frenzied wheat boom on the southern Plains, followed by a decade-long drought during the 1930s, nearly swept away the breadbasket of the nation. Vivid interviews with more than two dozen survivors of those hard times, combined with dramatic photos and seldom seen movie footage, bring to life stories of incredible human suffering and equally incredible human perseverance. Free and open to all. Part 2 scheduled for July 19.

Alaska’s Aleutian Islands exist within a remote region of the North Pacific, and for Dr. Doug Rasher, a Senior Research Scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, they are a perfect laboratory for his research. These subarctic islands sit at the frontier of ocean warming and acidification, and because of this they may act as a “canary in the coal mine,” a bellwether of sorts for how other areas of our oceans will be affected by climate change. For the past three years, Dr. Rasher has been working to unravel the affects climate change is having on the ecology of Aleutian kelp forests, specifically looking at a species of reef-building algae that has persisted there for millennia. Join him to discuss not just how the ecology of this remote and vast ecosystem is changing, but also how his research will help us understand the changes currently occurring within our own Gulf of Maine.

The show begins at 7:30 PM. Doors for seating open at 7:00 PM. Advance tickets $20, day of show $25. Guy Davis: An Ambassador of the Blues. Guy Davis once said, “I like antiques and old things, old places, that still have the dust of those who’ve gone before us lying upon them.” Blowing that dust off just enough to see its beauty is something Guy has excelled at for over 20 years of songwriting and performing. It’s no wonder his reverence for the music of the Blues Masters who’ve gone before him has been evident in every album he’s ever recorded or concert he’s given. Guy has had his musical storytelling influenced by artists like Blind Willie McTell and Big Bill Broonzy, and his musicality from artists as diverse as Lightnin’ Hopkins and Babatunde Olatunji. However, there’s one man that Guy most credits for his harmonica techniques, by stealing and crediting from him everything that he could, and that man is the legendary Sonny Terry. Join us tonight when blues comes to Boothbay Harbor!
