The Friends of Colonial Pemaquid announce the opening of their new gift shop located in the Fort House on the grounds of Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site. Hours will be weekend afternoons noon-5 p.m. on Saturday and noon-4 p.m. on Sunday from Aug. 24 through Oct. 14.

Backyard Wildlife Blue jays
Blue jays are bold and brash backyard birds. Their vibrant blue color and distinctive personality make them a striking sight. In Lincoln County, blue jays are common, year-round visitors. Although some blue jays migrate, many do not. It is unclear as to why some blue jays move, and others stay in a preferred location. In backyards, blue jays prefer oak and beech trees. They are also found in forest edges, gardens, wooded parks, and in more developed areas.
‘Democracy and Its Discontents’ Art Reception at Hurricane Gallery
Waldoboro’s Hurricane Gallery opens its 2019 exhibition with a reception on Saturday, Aug. 24 for the show “Democracy and Its Discontents,” which is a clear nod to Sigmund Freud’s famous essay “Civilization and Its Discontents,” with its emphasis on the eternal battle between the rational and the irrational, consciousness and the unconscious, civilization versus the individual’s instinctual need for freedom.

Old Bristol Historical Society Plans Archive Center in Store
The Old Bristol Historical Society expects to take over legal responsibility later this summer for the former Poole Brothers/Hammond Lumber retail store as well as the old Pemaquid Mill located at the Pemaquid Falls Preserve of Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust (formerly the Damariscotta River Association and the Pemaquid Watershed Association).
