Veterans from all branches of the U.S. military are invited to attend an informal get-together on Wednesday, Oct. 4 from 9:30-10-30 a.m. at Chase Point Assisted Living, 51 Schooner St., Damariscotta. The group meets the first Wednesday of each month at Chase Point.
Volunteers Needed for Trail Work Day
Pemaquid Watershed Association and Damariscotta River Association will conduct a work day at Crooked Farm Preserve in Bristol on Saturday, Sept. 30. Trail crew members are needed to improve sections of the preserve’s three-mile trail system.

Josephine “Josie” T. Giles, 82, of Boothbay, passed away on the evening of Sept. 19 in her sleep at her home with her daughters by her side. Josie was born in Belfast, Ireland on March 3, 1935.
‘Firearms of Colonial America’ in Newcastle
On Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m., the Newcastle Historical Society will host a talk by Jeffrey Miller called “Firearms of Colonial America,” an overview of the various types of firearms used commonly in New England during the Colonial era. The talk will be held in the community room at the Newcastle fire station on River Road. A short business meeting will be held after the presentation.
Mark Lazzari Exhibits at Savory Maine
Damariscotta artist Mark Lazzari is a self-taught painter of landscapes. He will exhibit his work at Savory Maine Dining & Provisions in Damariscotta work from Thursday, Sept. 28 through Nov. 6. The public is invited to a reception to meet the artist on Friday, Oct. 6 from 3-5 p.m. at Savory Maine, which will provide delectable sweet and savory finger foods. Wine and beer will be available.

Glenwood “Glenn” Paye, 88, of Newcastle, passed away on the afternoon of Sept. 20 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta after a long illness. Born in Tupper Lake, N.Y. on April 24, 1929, he was the only son of Madeline Paye Donaldson.
Jefferson’s Madison Allen Passes Eagle Scout Board of Review
Less than 5 percent of all Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle, and on Sept. 20, six local Eagle aspirants passed a major milestone in their quest for scouting’s highest honor when they passed their Eagle Scout Board of Review. Among the six was Boy Scout Madison Allen, of Jefferson Troop 216.
Newcastle History Fort Anne in Sheepscot
Fort Anne was probably constructed by the first residents of Sheepscot in the early 1600s. In some places it is spelled Ann, in others, Anne. I have chosen to use Anne as I suspect it was named for the then Queen of England.

Moose Season Begins Monday, Sept. 25
On Monday, Sept. 25, more than 700 moose hunters will enter the Maine woods seeking Maine’s most majestic mammal. This is the 37th year of Maine’s modern moose hunt, a hunt which resumed in 1980 after being closed since 1936.
Richard J. Rushmore Jr.
Richard J. Rushmore Jr., of Apalachicola, Fla., Hampden, and Pemaquid Point, passed away peacefully at his home on Sept. 9 after a three-year battle with cancer.
Restoration of Waldo Theatre Grounds Begins
On Monday, Sept. 18, Shannon Mahan and Andrew Federman of MAC Tree Service in Pemaquid and a group of volunteers donated their time and expertise to tackle some of the bigger groundskeeping needs at the Waldo Theatre in Waldoboro.
