The musical group Salty Dogs will be featured at this year’s Bands for Books event on Sunday, Sept. 3 from 5-7 p.m. at picturesque Seafield Farm in Wiscasset, owned by Wiscasset Selectman Katharine Martin-Savage. It will be the fourth year the Friends of the Wiscasset Public Library group has held such an event, whose purpose is to raise money for projects such as painting, carpeting, and lighting to keep the historic Wiscasset Public Library building in good shape.

Youth Bear Hunting Day is Aug. 26, Bear Season Starts Aug. 28
Maine’s bear season begins on Monday, Aug. 28 throughout the state of Maine, and youth hunters get their own day on Saturday, Aug. 26. Last year, 10,936 hunters purchased a permit to hunt bear, with 2,859 hunters harvesting a bear for a success rate of 26 percent.
Open Lighthouse Day Offers Free Admission
Maine’s iconic coastal sentinels take center stage during Maine’s ninth annual Open Lighthouse Day to be held this year on Saturday, Sept. 9. Twenty-five lighthouses will be open to the public throughout the state, offering free entry for visitors on this one day.

Women’s Journey Group at Wildwood Studio

Sunday Paddle on Labor Day Weekend
A leisurely canoe/kayak paddle on Crystal Lake in Washington is coming up on Sunday, Sept. 3 starting at 9 a.m., sponsored by Medomak Valley Land Trust and Washington Lakes Watershed Association. Environmental educator and Maine Guide Rob Stenger will lead the paddle around this little gem of a lake. It will be this small lake’s first public paddle this year.
Waldoboro Food Pantry News
On Aug. 15, the Waldoboro Food Pantry served 57 households with food assistance consisting of food items purchased from Hannaford Supermarket in Waldoboro and the Common Market in Union, as well as from Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn. Many bakery items were furnished to the households from Borealis Breads in Waldoboro and from the Cupboard Collective in Auburn.
Oil Painters Kefauver and Mabry at Pemaquid Art Gallery
Two fine oil painters, Mary Mabry, of Waldoboro, and Will Kefauver, of Damariscotta, are showing their work at Pemaquid Art Gallery this season. Both are skilled at landscapes as well as portraits and figurative subjects. Relatively recent additions to the gallery — Mabry is a guest this year and it is Kefauver’s third season as a member — their work adds to the professional quality of artwork seen at the gallery, located on Pemaquid Loop Road in New Harbor (Bristol).
