It’s dark in the morning now when I leave Bath for Lincoln County. I follow a fast moving stream of headlights up Route 1. That’s how I know day is coming. If it was the middle of the night, I’d be chasing my own high beams, the road to myself.
NEVER TOO LATE FOR A LEAP OF FAITH
I get a funny look sometimes when I tell people I’m 50. I won’t flatter myself and suggest it’s because I don’t look my age. I probably do. So what? I’ve waited all my life to look in the mirror and not worry about what I see. Fine lines and sprigs of facial hair suit me just fine. I’m not a young woman anymore. And I am thankful for that.
VETERANS’ UNTOLD STORIES
I am the daughter and granddaughter of war veterans. My father served in the Air Force during Vietnam, and my maternal grandfather fought with the Army in World War II.
BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE
Election Day has passed and with it my first and only term as the Ward 4 councilor for the city of Bath, a near neighbor to Lincoln County, and a far cry from the municipal structure of its towns.
PRAISE AND APPRECIATION
The Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary wants to say thank you. The Lincoln County News wants to, as well.
The Way Back Get Lost
There are many ways to get to know a place. My first three months in Lincoln County are highlighted by local advice, curiosity, a sense of adventure, and a low-key search for the best French fries.
WHAT ABOUT QUESTIONS 2 AND 3?
State referendum Question 1 is not the only one on the Maine ballot this November. It may seem like it is, given all the ads and discussion forums spotlighting it.

Ship’s Log: Reflections on the First Two Months
I’ve just about got my sea legs under me as we approach my two-month milestone as editor of The Lincoln County News. It helps that a more than capable crew sees to the running of this ship week in and week out. One cannot take over the helm of any vessel with confidence — metaphorically or otherwise — without able seaman so to speak, who know their jobs and do them well and reliably.
RESPITE FROM WORRY
I spent another on-call reporter weekend in Lincoln County Sept. 10-12. Fortunately, it was very quiet on the scanner. That means most Lincoln County Communications Center calls were for ambulance or police-only services.
Dresden Blaze Draws Multiple Departments
A Dresden woman and her dog are safe after a fire destroyed their home Sunday afternoon, Sept. 19.
WHAT YOU DO MATTERS
A flashbulb memory is “a highly vivid and detailed ‘snapshot’ of a moment in which a consequential, surprising, and emotionally arousing piece of news was learned,” according to simplypsychology.org.
Lincoln County Says So Long To Summer 2021
Lincoln County residents and visitors from both near and far wasted no time gathering for celebrations throughout the summer of 2021.
SOME LOCAL ISSUES TO THINK ABOUT
I spent last weekend as the on-call reporter from Friday afternoon to Monday morning. That means I was responsible for listening to pages from the Lincoln County Communications Center for breaking news, like fires and accidents. The editorial staff takes turns doing this.
