Review: Jon Byrer Show Foreshadows Vibrancy Of Spring
Belfast oil-enamel painter Jon Byrer’s current show on the walls of The Carey Gallery at Skidompha Public Library in Damariscotta is a lovely reminder that spring is on its way. None of Byrer’s large landscape paintings feature snow. Instead, they offer colorful glimpses of the world as it will look shortly – full of flowers, rushing water, and beautiful skies.

As I write this column, I am wearing green because it is St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. March 17 also marks one year since I started working at The Lincoln County News. I arrived in Maine a year ago March 16 from California, having never set foot in the Pine Tree State before that. But I have to say that I have gotten to know my way around fairly well, especially around the vibrant arts community that exists in Lincoln County. I look forward to the year ahead.

When LCCT, the resident theater company at Damariscotta’s Lincoln Theater, held its general auditions in the fall, it was searching for talented people interested in investing their talents, time, and energy in creating wonderful live entertainment for the community, including its upcoming production of “Mary Poppins — In Concert.” It turns out that Mary Poppins herself it not the only one with a mysterious background and hidden stories. Take, for example, one of LCCT’s newest cast members, Zora Margolis.

One of the nice things about taking in an art show at the Damariscotta River Grill in downtown Damariscotta is that the two-story restaurant has a lot of wall space on which to display a lot of art.

Photographer extraordinaire: I recently had the pleasure of spending time talking with Jefferson photographer Michael Sevon. I learned about Sevon from Anne Plummer, who teaches writing at Great Salt Bay Community School in Damariscotta and also oversees the GSB Online Gallery of Arts and Literature. Sevon’s truly fine work is featured in the GSB Alumni Gallery section of the site.
