The alewives are running and an array of festivities are planned to celebrate this awesome natural event and the restoration of the stone fish ladder, which the fish climb to spawn in the fresh water of the Damariscotta Lake.

The Whitefield Library & Community Center, at 1 Arlington Lane in Whitefield, will open its doors for the season on Saturday, May 18th at 10 a.m. with an ice cream social and a children’s story hour from 10:30-11:30 a.m.

Spring is in the air, and that means garden time! Organic perennials from Rebel Hill Farm can help create inviting habitat for the natural community on homeowners’ land. Those interested should come by Midcoast Conservancy, 290 Route 1 in Edgecomb on Saturday, May 25 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when Rebel Hill Farm growers will be on hand to help with picking the right plants.

Pumpkin Vine Family Farm in Somerville will host a day of education and fun on Sunday, May 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. when its experienced farmers will help people get their gardens off to a great start, whether they are 5 or 85!

The Garden Club of Wiscasset’s annual plant sale will be Saturday, May 11 at the Wiscasset Municipal Building, at Routes 1 and 27 in Wiscasset, from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Sheepscott Community Church will host a free public supper from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the Sheepscot Clubhouse, 619 Sheepscot Road, Newcastle, with inside and outside seating, weather permitting.

People are encouraged to join bird expert Jeff Cherry for a morning of bird identification on Tuesday, May 7, from 7-9 am. This will be a short-distance, slow walk at the Midcoast Conservancy Bass Falls Preserve to enjoy the recently returned migrant birds of meadow and edge habitat.
