If you are over 90, you probably know, over 80 you may remember. Younger than that, I don’t imagine you ever saw the ice truck. Not the ice cream truck that everybody knows. The ice truck.

Thrifty Good Food Healthy, Warming Winter Soups
Coastal cleanup after last week’s storms is a bleak reminder that we are truly in January despite those first days of unseasonably mild weather in 2024. It’s time to bundle up with scarves, hats and gloves every time we venture outside to appreciate the pale sun of winter and to savor our return to the warmth of the house and the kitchen. Now is the perfect season to have a pot of soup simmering on the kitchen stove.

Paws for Thought
As a pet sitter, I often get emails from people asking if I provide such-and-such a service. I’m always happy to answer these types of questions because, like all animal lovers, I want to help out a pet in any way I can. If I can’t provide a service, I’ll try to recommend someone who can. Most of the people who contact me have some date or dates in mind when they reach out. Unfortunately, emergencies arise, and having someone who has met your pets, even briefly, is better than trying to find a stranger to care for them if you are in a predicament.
Tails & Tales
There was much chatter coming from the barn as I arrived for evening chores. Pickles had already alerted me earlier in the morning that the much anticipated seed catalog had arrived. When I entered the barn, the animals were enthralled with the pictures.
Skidompha Skoop
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated by Congress as a National Day of Service. On that Monday, I took a few moments to reflect on just how fortunate Skidompha is to have the support of our volunteers and how Skidompha would be a very different institution without their generous work. Indulge me a little horn tooting.
Round Pond
While there cannot be any storms in our history that compare whatsoever to last week’s devastation, it did get me wondering about others that may have occurred many years ago. As we used to call it, in the olden days. Of course you know who I called, Bethiah Callahan. She has her grandmother, Bethiah Thompson’s journals that go back to 1944. There were others previous to that but unfortunately Bethiah is not in possession of them. Her grandmother being born in 1858 and passing away in 1965 was a wealth of information. She wrote of storms here in Round Pond.

Skidompha Skoop
I took a brief bee break on Tuesday and was reminded I missed my winter bee update for 2023. Apologies for that. I’m pleased to report that our hive is doing well. We have a good winter population with frames of honey, and we have not needed to supplement with feed yet.
Waldoboro Voices 'Because the customer is always right'
Walk into Bernard and Marian De Lima’s Jade Express Chinese Restaurant on Route 1 and you’ll see a Christian cross saying, “For with God, nothing shall be impossible;” three golden cats and one white one to welcome patrons; a figurine of St. Joseph and another of the Virgin Mary, respectively Bernard’s and Marian’s patron saints; a bowl of rice symbolizing generosity because rice expands as it cooks; and a glass of water because in Asian culture, water is a continuous blessing.

Nobleboro History Revisited Income From Smelts and Eels 100 Years Ago
William N. Coombs of Damariscotta Mills enhanced his income in 1878-79 by catching smelts and eels in Great Salt Bay at the Mills. He was 24 years of age at that time. His catch was shipped on the Knox & Lincoln Railroad for sale by commission men at Boston or New York City.
What’s at The Waldo?
Thanks to everyone who has made a donation to our annual appeal. As of this writing we are just $7,685 away from meeting our $40,000 goal, which, thanks to our matching grants, will magically become $80,000 if we can meet it. Those kind donors have allowed us to extend the appeal period to Jan. 15, so please, if you haven’t yet made your donation, it’s not too late! Every little bit helps, and remember, it will be doubled if we meet this goal!
