A day at the opera: Back in late December, I wrote in this column about all the arts-related venues and events I planned to check out in 2019. Among the resolutions I listed for the new year, I said, “I resolve to take in at least one Met opera broadcast at Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta.”

Congratulations to the Boothbay Region High School girls basketball team on a historic season.
March is here and it has a way of encouraging me. Winter will clearly end, sooner or later. The past two snowstorms were not as bad as predicted. The light has changed, and I sense spring is just around the corner. Of course, we must endure mud season first!

OK kids, this week’s recipe is outrageous. It’s pecan-crusted chicken, tenderized with buttermilk. Don’t worry if you don’t like buttermilk, or don’t think you do, because chances are you’ve never even tried it.

It’s back to the classroom this week! We hosted a number of programs for our school-age patrons last week, our toddler and baby book groups were bustling, we had young journalists writing newsworthy articles, and we had a teen creative-writing workshop!

The accompanying photograph is of Mertland Steer and Jane Foster. Mertland was Bert Steer’s son and Bethiah’s brother. Jane was Lelia Atkinson’s stepdaughter.
Creativity from coast to coast to coast: Last month, when I went to view the Great Salt Bay Community School art show in the cafe at Rising Tide Co-op in Damariscotta (see “Lincoln County Artsbeat,” Jan. 12), I ran into an abstract painter named Jaap Eduard Helder.

Lemon sponge pie is sublime. I really think that’s the best word to describe it. It’s delicious, it’s beautiful, it’s rich and creamy, it’s spongy, it’s light and fluffy. But mostly it’s just plain sublime.
