Singer-songwriter David Mallett, is one of America’s true original troubadours. In a career spanning four decades, he has recorded 17 albums, had several hundred covers of his songs, including the American folk classic Garden Song [Inch by Inch, Row by Row] and performed in clubs, concert halls and festivals across the US, Canada and Europe. He has appeared on numerous broadcasts, including National Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. The annual Home and Garden tour is a highlight of the summer season in the Boothbay Harbor area and a great way to gain an insider’s view of the natural beauty that surrounds us.

This year’s tour features five spectacular and fascinating homes and their surrounding gardens; and one beautiful garden. On the tour are architecturally significant homes with incredible views on Linekin Bay, the Damariscotta River and Southport’s Pratt Island, a charming home in Sprucewold and an 1840 Greek Cape Revival in Boothbay Harbor.

On Saturday, July 22 at 4:00 PM at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Newcastle, plucked-string specialist Timothy Burris will play a program of 19th-century music for classical guitar. A free-will offering will be taken at the door to benefit the St. Andrew’s Community Outreach program.

The program will include works of Spanish guitarist/composers from Julian Arcas to Francisco Tárrega (from the region of Almería) to several composers from Cataluña (José Ferrer, José Viñas, Jaume Bosch i Renard, and the best known, Miguel Llobet). Mr. Burris will sketch the cultural milieu that gave rise to this hotbed of creative fervor for the guitar-and the arts in general.

The guitar used in the program will be a modern copy of Antonio Torres’ FE17 (built for Mr. Burris by Richard Berg of Ottawa). The original was completed in 1864 and given by Torres to a young but promising Francisco Tárrega, from whose hands it eventually passed to the young but preternaturally gifted Argentinian, Maria Anido.

Timothy Burris (lute, theorbo, and guitar) has performed widely in Europe and the US, including many appearances with world-renowned early music specialists. Regionally, he is the lutenist of BOOM, the Baroque Orchestra of Maine; he and cellist Raffael Scheck appear as the duo ScheckMate.

Mr Burris holds a soloist’s diploma from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he studied with the world-renowned lutenist Toyohiko Satoh and the Uruguayan guitarist Antonio Pereira-Arias (who himself studied with Andrés Segovia). He also holds a PhD from Duke University (his dissertation focused on the use of lute and theorbo in ensemble vocal music at the Dresden court).

Back by popular demand, Maine Friends of Music, a professional chamber ensemble composed of renowned soprano Mary Sullivan, flutist Linda Brunner, bassoonist David DeBolt, and keyboardist Sean Fleming, will perform at the Union Church of South Bristol on Tuesday, July 25, at 6:30 PM. Maine Friends of Music specializes in quick-paced programs that create interesting listening experiences, with a variety of tone, colors, and styles. Much of the ensemble’s repertoire features a mixture of classic eighteenth-century Baroque selections, including works by Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as twentieth century composers such as Debussy, Hindemith, Vaughan-Williams, and Koechlin. New music written for the Maine Friends of Music concerts by crossover classical/jazz composer Bill Douglas, as well as material composed by Bernard Garfield, David DeBolt, and Sean Fleming expands the
ensemble’s repertoire further. “Imagination and adaptation are twin themes that inspire the annual concerts by the Maine Friends of Music, one of the state’s most unusual performing ensembles. Artificial Intelligence is all over the news these days, but there’s less coverage on how the technology might be applied to further science. Bigelow Laboratory researchers, though, are already leveraging artificial intelligence to create new tools – and improve existing ones – to forecast ocean conditions and protect coastal communities. Join Nick Record, senior research scientist and director of the Tandy Center for Ocean Forecasting at Bigelow Laboratory, as he discusses some of the potential applications of AI, like creating an early warning system for harmful algal blooms, and the challenges of using the technology for ocean forecasting.
