Celebrate summer and join the party at Cocktails at the Castle, Historic New England’s annual fundraiser for Wiscasset’s Castle Tucker, from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 13. Help preserve this unique historical treasure while basking in the spectacular view of the Sheepscot River and delighting the palate with delicious Maine hors d’oeuvres from Back River Bistro.
The evening includes an after-hours look inside one of Maine’s most fascinating historic houses. Castle Tucker, built in 1807, was the dream home of Judge Silas Lee and his wife Tempe, who enjoyed an elegant lifestyle in their unusual new mansion.
In 1858, Richard Tucker Jr. and his young wife Mollie moved into the house, immediately turning it into a fashionable Victorian home for their family of five children, who went on to live extraordinary lives outside Wiscasset. Hear the stories of this talented family revealed in a collection of personal letters saved by their granddaughter.
Very little was changed in the house after 1900, so visitors see the interiors as the Tuckers left them, filled with their furnishings, belongings, and decor, including the 1858 parlor and a kitchen with four generations of cooking technology still in place where it was used.
Advance ticket purchase is required. Tickets are $45 per person and are available at my.historicnewengland.org/18687/cocktails-at-the-castle or by calling 882-7169.

From raging fiddle tunes, to saxophone solos and unrequited love songs, the music of The Faux Paws would be hard to pin down with standard genre descriptions. The trio’s contagious groove, and feel-good melting pot folk music has been honed over ten years of playing together, and is the sound of three close friends who feel a musical kinship that transcends any stylistic limitations. Brothers Andrew and Noah VanNorstrand grew up playing contra dance music with their musician mother in the band Great Bear. Chris Miller grew up in Florida, and he was enamored with bluegrass, and studied jazz before going on to play with GRAMMY nominated Cajun-country band The Revelers. Since meeting in 2012, the trio has toured across North America several times, sometimes under the name The Faux Paws, sometimes as part of other larger ensembles. Catch this trio tonight. Advance discount tickets $20, available only from the box office at 207-633-5159 (open Wed – Fri from 10-2). Regular tickets $25 online at boothbayoperahouse.com, and on the day of show if available.
