July 8 Picnic in Westport Island
The Westport Volunteer Fire Department, in conjunction with the Westport Community Association, will hold an annual picnic on Saturday, July 8 at 5:30 p.m. at 644 Main Road, Westport Island. The menu features grilled chicken, coleslaw, baked beans, hot dogs, corn on the cob, and a great assortment of desserts.
Nobleboro Historical Society Open House on Saturdays
The Nobleboro Historical Center is open every Saturday in July and August from 1:30-4:30 p.m. and a docent will be there to help. The center’s building is the old Hawthorne schoolhouse from West Neck Road that was used from the mid-1800s until the 1930s; school desks and books are set up in front of the original blackboard.

When the corn is as high as an elephant’s eye, I am ready for the 4th of July. Each summer brings with it a surge of patriotism. To live in a land where one can travel in freedom any day of the week still amazes me, especially after living in countries where this was not always so. Overseas, I could never hear or sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” of my heritage without shedding tears. Even to this day, when I place my hand on my heart and start to sing, the tears appear.
Summer Events to Benefit Waldo Theatre
The Waldo Theatre in Waldoboro will be the beneficiary of two summer events hosted off-site through the generosity of the local community. Events are scheduled for Sunday, July 9 and Wednesday, Aug. 9. All proceeds will go towards the Waldo Theatre’s capital campaign drive.
