Among the 32 artists showing at Pemaquid Art Gallery this year are two whose works define the term “fresh.” Both Barbara Klein and Cindy Spencer exploit strong color and simplicity to render images that often hint at a story behind the scene. To quote Klein, visitors are encouraged “to bring their own impressions and memories” to their viewing experience.
Schilke Art at Waldoboro Public Library
Robert W. Schilke is August’s artist at the Waldoboro Public Library with his waterscapes and landscapes gracing the main hall. Schilke’s watercolor style is unique in that he builds watercolors, like in oil painting, to create realistic tones, colors, and detail. His ability to recreate the actual color of the Caribbean Sea is a trademark. Some of his realistic creations look like photographs.

Author Rivera Sun Focuses on Nonviolent Resistance at Afternoon Talk
Approximately 20 people turned out for a free afternoon talk on Friday, Aug. 10 by author Rivera Sun at the Midcoast Outreach and Peace Center at the Friends Meetinghouse in Damariscotta. Sun has written a number of books, including “The Dandelion Insurrection” and “The Roots of Resistance.” She was invited to speak by Coastal Senior College’s Challenge of Change dialogue group.
Last Call for Live Edge Tickets
This Sunday, Aug. 19, Midcoast Conservancy will host the seventh annual Live Edge Music Festival at Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson. Tickets purchased before 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 come with a voucher good for a second entree up to $20 at 12 participating restaurants in the Midcoast area. At $20 a ticket, using the voucher can completely offset the ticket price.
Horton Displays Photographs at PWA Office-Gallery
The current art exhibit in the office gallery of Pemaquid Watershed Association is by photographer Rick Horton. His show is titled “Eclectic Works” and is a sampling of his photography. There will be a reception for Horton on Friday, Aug. 17, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and all are welcome to attend to view the photography and to speak with the artist.
Higgins Duo at Saltwater Artists Gallery
Pat Higgins joined the Saltwater Artists Gallery this year with her mosaic pictures. The mosaic pieces are hand cut from PBC sheets on a scroll saw. They are then sanded and painted with numerous coats of acrylic paints and glazes.

Ernie Couch and Revival, from Nashville to Waldoboro
On Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m., Ernie Couch and Jason Couch, from Nashville, Tenn., will be returning to Waldoboro and sharing their country gospel music at the Waldoboro Word of Life Church as they spend about a week in Maine visiting six locations.
Kilburn to Host ‘Guests on the Lawn’ Art Demos and Sale
Artist Jan Kilburn, partnering with artist Marnie Sinclair, will host a large group of artists painting en plein air on Saturday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The artists will be painting in the gardens and on the lawn of the Jan Kilburn Gallery and the Sinclair Gallery at the “Guests on the Lawn” event. The rain date is Sunday, Aug. 19. Kilburn and Sinclair are signature members of the Bristol Road Galleries.

Low-key celeb in our midst: The list of musical artists that play an instrument designed by Nobleboro stringed-instrument designer extraordinaire Ned Steinberger is literally a who’s-who list of musical talents. Avant-garde legend Laurie Anderson, jazz musician Michal Urbaniak, bassist/cellist Tony Levin, South African bassist Bakithi Kumalo, and bassists Eric Mingus (son of Charles Mingus) and Jamaaladeen Tacuma are just several names on a fairly lengthy list (viewable at thinkns.com) of highly accomplished musicians who prefer Steinberger’s unique, finely crafted, headless electric instruments – violins, cellos, and basses, both bass guitars and uprights.
Review: Lyndon Delano Shows Work at Two School Street Venues
One only has to venture down School Street in Damariscotta a short distance off Main Street to see the work of mixed media artist Lyndon Delano. His work can be viewed at two venues on the street, in fact. Delano currently has an art show up at Shapers Fitness Gym, which runs through the month of August. He also recently started a small gallery at her home, across the street from Shapers.
Kigel’s 20th Annual ‘Eastern Views’ in Waldoboro
This August, Waldoboro artist Jean Kigel celebrates two decades of exhibiting paintings of Maine and the Far East. These annual exhibitions began in Tenants Harbor, transitioned to Damariscotta, and ultimately came to Waldoboro. This year’s event showcases Kigel’s newest paintings on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 10, 11, and 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
Waldoboro Artist Creates Beautiful, High-Performance ‘Sculptural Speakers’
Waldoboro artist Philippe Guillerm is widely known for his beautiful wood sculptures featuring found wood meticulously carved to resemble musical instruments. Guitars and members of the violin family are favorites of his.
