Painting in snowstorms: Samantha Merrill held up a small acrylic painting of an ocean scene. “This I painted during a snowstorm when I had nothing else to do. I wanted something with waves and it just kind of happened,” she told me recently.

Organist Zoller in Benefit Concert for Animal Shelter
Local concert organist Jay Zoller will play an organ concert to benefit the Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Edgecomb at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 15 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 11 Glidden St., Newcastle. The concert is free to the public, but donations will be accepted for the animal shelter.

Pemaquid Group of Artists Seeks New Members
The Pemaquid Group of Artists announces a call for artists to exhibit this coming season at Pemaquid Art Gallery at Lighthouse Park, Bristol. The gallery is celebrating its 90th season in operation this year. The residency requirement has been expanded to include all of Lincoln County. The gallery, open from early June until Columbus Day, is located at Lighthouse Park at Pemaquid Point, which is a popular attraction for thousands of visitors in the summer in Maine.

“The family fishermen are going the way of family farmers,” says one man interviewed in “Dead in the Water,” the new documentary film by Southern California filmmaker David Wittkower showing at Harbor Theater in Boothbay Harbor on Monday, April 9. Shot in New England coastal towns, the film chronicles the struggles of New England fishermen to remain viable in an age of what some might deem excessive federal regulation of the ground-fishing industry.

Getting to know Phoebe Dean: Delightful barely begins to describe my recent experience of spending time talking with 21-year-old self-taught artist Phoebe Dean. In addition to being very accomplished in the art of drawing, Dean is also a barista at downtown Damariscotta coffee bar and co-working space Buzz Maine. She is the one responsible for making the cool-looking new signage tacked onto the front counter at Buzz.
Celebrate Spring with Paper Tulips Workshop
Celebrate spring with a workshop called “Creating Paper Tulips with Alcohol Inks” at River Arts in Damariscotta on Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dixfield paper artist Amity Beane will lead attendees in creating paper tulips with paper foliage.

Weeks of rehearsals are over, the set built, the lyrics learned. The performing company consists of leads, a chorus, and an orchestra of more than 50 people. More folks are working behind the scenes. It truly “takes a village” to put on a live musical production.
