Stephen Busch grew up in 1950s Norwalk, Conn. with interests in both creative pursuits and the sea. As a youth, his interest in art and painting was overshadowed by a thirst for the sea life, satisfied early on by sailing and racing with friends on Long Island Sound.
He pursued studies at the State University of New York Maritime College, after which he sailed the world in the merchant marine, coming ashore as a captain. He began taking evening art classes, but it was not until 1994 that he had the time to take up painting seriously. In 1999, after sailing his ketch to Maine over the course of three summers, Busch and his wife settled in South Bristol, where he established his studio.
His knowledge of ships, ship construction and his abiding respect for the sea has influenced and is evident in many of his paintings, and he has an avid interest in maritime history. Although he paints maritime themes primarily, his work also encompasses broader subject matter that reflects a love and understanding of nature.
Busch often paints in a narrative form, striving to draw viewers into his paintings with a sense of the mysterious, as in “The Intruder,” where the viewer must speculate on the outcome.
A plein air as well as studio painter, Busch is inspired by memories of his time at sea, notes from his navigation journals, and imagining how a scene might have appeared, as informed by his own experiences.
Come to the library during the month of March to view Busch’s paintings. The exhibit officially opens Friday, March 3, from 4-6 p.m. at the library, 2000 Route 129 in South Bristol. Light refreshments will be served. Hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 12-6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, call 644-1882 or find RutherfordLibraryME on Facebook.

The Peace Gallery in Damariscotta is pleased to welcome Darshan Music back on Saturday, March 4, at 5 p.m. for another community session of Ecstatic Kirtan.
Increasingly popular in the U.S., this ancient call-and-response form of chanting is actually a type of yoga, and Darshan Music’s modern take on this ancient practice offers participants the benefits of a yoga class or meditation session.
“Darshan’s two previous performances here were remarkable,” said The Peace Gallery Director Bernie DeLisle. “Members and guests alike reported a sense of wellbeing and community. We’re thrilled they found time to visit us again. March in Maine is exactly the time for this kind of event”.
Ever since they combined forces in 2017, Darshan Music members Carla Renzi (drums) and Justin Maseychik (harmonium) have been performing their interpretation of this genre of Bangla song in yoga studios and venues across the country. During the event, participants are invited to sing, clap, or sit just quietly. The emphasis of any performance is calmness and harmony.
Participants report reduced stress and increased sleep after a session.
All community members are welcome, the event is offered by donation. Operational for less than a year, The Peace Gallery has brought numerous community health and healing events to the region, and exhibited the work of more than 20 veteran artists. In addition to unique events like Darshan Music’s performance, the gallery offers weekly yoga, meditation, and other classes.
These classes are offered free to area veterans and are listed on The Peace Gallery website thepeacegallery.com
Located at 112 Main St., Damariscotta, The Peace Gallery is a community-based veteran’s art collaborative dedicated to supporting and showcasing the creative work of veterans, and providing a community resource for practices that support health, well-being and a mutual understanding. The next meeting of the Old Bristol Garden Club will be held Thursday, March 9, at Second Congregational Church, 51 Main St., Newcastle. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a short business discussion and then be followed by a Chewonki Traveling Natural History program on vernal pools.
Vernal pools are beautiful springtime habitats for many amphibians, a safe(ish) place to raise their young aquatic babies before they undergo metamorphosis and transform into land-walking, air-breathing adults.
Participants will learn these species-rich spring pools help support food chains for a variety of animals living in adjacent ecosystems.
Following the program tea and cookies will be served by this month’s tea committee: Holly Emmons, Carol Rice-Dempsey, Susan Bates, and Denise Gordon. All are welcome and new members can join at any time. If local schools are closed due to inclement weather, the garden club meeting is canceled as well. For more information, follow the Old Bristol Garden Club on Facebook.

The Waldo and King Eider’s Pub are excited to announce the nation’s premier U2 tribute act, Massachusetts-based The Joshua Tree will be live at The Waldo on Saturday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m., just in time to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.
Performing all over the country, including the halftime show at Gillette Stadium for the New England Patriots’ season opener, The Joshua Tree pride themselves on their ability to generate a unique musical experience that does not lend itself to impersonations. Without compromising artistic integrity, the band has gone to great lengths to reproduce the distinct sound of one of the world’s most popular rock bands.
Unique to The Joshua Tree is their dedication to the entire U2 songbook, including early fan favorites from the 1980-1987 period (Boy, October, War, The Unforgettable Fire, and The Joshua Tree).
“We started out doing the songs from the album ‘The Joshua Tree.’ That was the music we loved and it had an immediate impact when we played it,” said founding member and bassist Joe Wilson. “We’re really focused on the essence of U2’s music. We try to get the music and the emotion of the music down. We are not impersonators and we don’t do costumes like some tribute acts. We just do our best to deliver the music in the spirit it was intended to have. For a lot of people this is the soundtrack of their childhood, their early adult years, and so we really strive to put that intensity across.”
A limited number of front row seats are available for $40 each. General admission tickets are available for $25 in advance: $30 the day of the event, at the box office starting at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and concessions, including beer (Guinness!) and wine will be available for purchase.
This event is made possible with the support of King Eider’s Pub in Damariscotta.
The Waldo Theatre is located at 916 Main St., in Waldoboro. Free parking is available on Main and School streets. Assistive listening devices are available at the box office. The Waldo is no longer requiring proof of vaccination, and has shifted to masks optional for all visitors. For more information and tickets for this and other events, go to thewaldotheatre.org

In recognition of St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Friday during Lent this year, Bishop Robert Deeley is authorizing individuals who choose to eat meat on that day (i.e., a traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner) to commute, that is, transfer their abstinence from meat to another day within that same week. Parishioners are able to make use of this commutation on St. Patrick’s Day for any reason, even if they are not necessarily attending a parish event that day.
