Sheepscot Chorus invites you to a concert featuring “Requiem for the Living,” and soprano Mary Sullivan, on Saturday, April 29 at 3:00 PM, and Sunday, April 30 at 3:00 p.m., at the Second Congregational Church, 51 Main St., Newcastle. A chorister said this when we last performed the “Requiem”: “It was such an incredible joy to be a part of yesterday’s extraordinary concert. My family members were stunned by the beauty of the “Requiem” which has left most of us profoundly
moved.”
“Requiem for the Living” by Dan Forrest, composed in 2013, is scored for mixed choir and orchestra with solos for soprano and tenor. Combining both liturgical and non-liturgical texts, this powerful five-movement work projects a wide range of meaningful expression, from a biting essay on the vanity and pain of mankind to a plea for mercy, and finally a celebration of eternal light. The work has received more than a hundred performances world-wide within a year of its composition, including performances in Canada, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and multiple performances at Carnegie Hall.
Sheepscot Valley Chorus is also delighted to announce the winners of our 2023 Student Music Awards, given annually to one student from each of the three local high schools. The students are selected by their high school music teachers, chosen for their commitment to and leadership in music. Award winners receive a stipend from the chorus and perform at the spring concerts. The 2023 Student Music Award winners are Grace Campbell from Boothbay Region High School, Matthew
Long from Lincoln Academy, and Elizabeth Chase from Wiscasset High School.
Pieces based on the beautiful poetry of the Song of Solomon, and Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In will round out the second half of the program. Tickets are $15 for adults and free for students, and may be purchased at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta, at the door, and at sheepscotvalleychorus.org. St. Cecilia Chamber Choir will present “Musical Potpourri” on Saturday, May 6 at 3:00, and Sunday, May 7 at 3:00 p.m., at
Damariscotta Baptist Church. Linda Blanchard is St. Cecilia’s artistic director and conductor, assisted by organist and pianist Sean Fleming. These concerts will feature Bach’s famous motet “Lobet den Herrn.” Advance tickets are strongly encouraged for these concerts.
The first half of the program traces choral music from the Medieval through Baroque eras, beginning with a soaring, ethereal chant by Medieval mystic Hildegard of Bingen sung by Marybeth McCaffrey, Mary Benner and Cally Alrich. John Dowland’s charming and humorously maudlin “Come Again, Sweet Love” features soloists Maya Baley,
Marybeth McCaffrey, Betsey Lavway, and Mary Benner. Josquin des Prez’s tongue-in-cheek “El Grillo” sings the praises of a
cricket. The half culminates with J.S. Bach’s joyful virtuosic motet, “Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden.”
The program’s second half explores the variety of 20th century choral music, opening with the soaring cathedral classic “Evening Hymn” by Harry Balfour Gardiner, which highlights Sean Fleming at the organ. Other second half selections will include Gabriel Fauré’s “Tantum Ergo,” Morten Lauridsen’s “Sure on This Shining Night,” Frank
Tichelli’s “Earth Song,” several folk songs of the British Isles, and Sam Pottle’s humorous setting of “Jabberwocky.”

Kalos is three innovative interpreters and composers of Celtic roots music: Eric McDonald, Ryan McKasson and Jeremiah McLane. They are masters of tradition who purposefully explore the dark corners floating on its edges, delivering an alluring musical complexity full of spontaneity and joyful exuberance. They set the standard for traditional repertoire with an underlying drive and pulse charged with rhythmic electricity and integrity.
Each brings an exceptionally diverse array of musical influences to the table. Eric studied jazz and bluegrass mandolin at the Berklee College of Music before finding his way to DADGAD guitar; Ryan carries a degree in viola performance, and is one of the youngest to ever win the US National Scottish Fiddle Championship; Jeremiah, in addition to being raised with Scottish roots, has studied Indonesian Gamelan, West African drumming, and the music of minimalist composers Steve Reich
and Philip Glass. His compositions have won numerous awards and been featured in films.
This evening promises to be a memorable one at the Opera House for those who love trad, as well as those who just love a good live show!
