Practicing primary care medicine means having the privilege every day to hear the private, complicated reality of people’s lives. It is being a part of the humanity we all share that is not on display, not apparent, or often not ever guessed at. It is the life stories of chronic illness, grief, loss, regret, shame, self-doubt, anger. It is the physical pain, emotional pain, and isolation of medical problems, curable and incurable. These are life stories that all of us share, to a greater or lesser extent, in different ways and with different outcomes.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the headquarters of the local charity organization Noah’s Dragons as it begins its annual holiday toy drive for the kids at Spring Harbor Psychiatric Hospital in Westbrook. 

Substance Use Disorder Treatment Advisory Team to Meet Dec. 19

District Attorney Natasha Irving will speak about restorative justice at the next Integrated Medication Assisted Treatment Services Advisory Team meeting, set for Thursday, Dec. 19 from 7:30-9 a.m. The meeting will take place at the LincolnHealth Education Department, 66 Chapman St., Damariscotta, in classroom 4.

Donald Lambert Folkers, 82, pastor of The Ridge Church in Martinsville and co-pastor of the Westport Island Baptist Church, passed away Nov. 26, 2019 at Maine Medical Center Comfort Care, of heart complications and stroke. 

Parade of Lights Winners Announced

For the second year in a row, the Alna Snowmobile Club swept both the Spirit Award and the People’s Choice Award for its entry in the Parade of Lights.

Barbara Elizabeth (Zybas) Powell, 68, of Damariscotta, entered into everlasting life on the afternoon of Dec. 7, 2019 at Cove’s Edge following a complicated illness.

Mary-Ruth Elizabeth Birkland Nelson Aug. 23, 1931 - Dec. 4, 2019

Mary-Ruth Elizabeth Birkland Nelson, age 88, passed away at home early on the morning of Dec. 4, 2019 as the sun rose over Long Cove on Westport Island. Ruth was born on Aug. 23, 1931 in New York City, the only child of Norwegian parents, Sverre and Olena Ovrebo Birkeland.
