Virginia G. McFarland, 97, of Newcastle, formerly of South Bristol, passed away on the evening of August 13 at the LincolnHealth – Miles Campus in Damariscotta.

Summer Sizzle Offers Live and Silent Auctions at Tops’l Farm

Kaja Vieilleux of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries in Thomaston will host the live auction featured at the Medomak Valley Land Trust’s Summer Sizzle. The annual fundraiser for this local nonprofit organization will be held Sunday, Aug. 20 at Tops’l Farm, 364 Bremen Road, Waldoboro.

Despite threatening weather on Saturday morning, Aug. 12, the fourth annual Olde Bristol Days Vintage Car Show hosted a multitude of collectible cars, trucks, and motorcycles. The event, free for all vehicles, has evolved into a popular, fun attraction for the entire family during Olde Bristol Days.

The Skidompha Library Genealogy Group’s next public program, “German Genealogy,” will be presented by genealogist and translator Katherine Schober on Friday, Aug. 25, from 10-11 a.m. in the library’s first-floor Porter Meeting Hall. A $5 donation is suggested to support ongoing genealogy programming.

Westport Island 10K and 5K Walk

The 13th annual Westport Island 10K run and 5K fun walk is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10. The 3.5-mile fun walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 10K race starts at 9 a.m.

Waldoboro Wanderings The patriarch Conrad Heyer -- part one

June 17, 1856 saw the largest throng of people ever to grace Waldoboro’s streets. Thousands of folks had arrived in the village strictly by foot, carriage, or boat, as there were no railroads in those days. They all came for the purpose of paying a last tribute to a hero, a legend, a myth. Conrad Heyer’s incredible life — described by newspapers in Maine, and papers from as far away as Milwaukee, Wisc. — had come to an end in February 1856. He was 107 years old.

The concept of fried green tomatoes hit the world 25 years ago as a literary event with the appearance of Fannie Flagg’s “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.” It is an intergenerational tale of an ordinary Southern family, its food, and its members taking care of each other. The book became popular and was even made into a movie a few years later. For people like me living in the North, it came with the additional revelation: yes, one could fry green tomatoes, and they taste great!
