Longtime reporter Charlotte Boynton forwarded an email to me this week in which she was thanked by someone doing historical work on Wiscasset’s Sunken Garden.
The Way Back Voices from the Past
I love the way we talk. Mainers, I mean. When I hear people speaking with the types of voices I remember from when I was growing up, I sometimes get a little teary. I am so thankful, like the Maine way with words is a language all its own, and one I am afraid is dying out.
FRIENDLY ADVICE FOR MEETINGS THESE DAYS
I found myself covering a couple of municipal and school board meetings last week, experiencing firsthand the challenges of reporting in a COVID-19 reality.
The Forgiving Art of Felting
Some people look forward to winter for all the only-when-it’s-cold outdoor recreation it invites. Lakes and ponds freeze for skating, ice fishing, and ice boating (see Midcoast Boaters Journal for columnist Bill Anthony’s profile of the sport). Snow draped fir trees transform familiar trails to bright and crystalline wonderlands. And, of course, there’s plenty of sledding, skiing, and snowman-making right outside the door.

The Way Back No Way Back
I was on vacation between Christmas and the new year, and made time for a beach walk, one of my favorite winter things to do. I feel a bit traitorous writing about Popham in my Lincoln County News monthly column, but keep in mind, it was all Lincoln County once, and for a very long time, too.

Unexpected Gifts
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all who celebrate during this most wonderful time of the year. I am looking forward to being with my family and sharing our traditions, but this year I’ve had to make some compromises.

Take a Walk on the Sweet Side with a Holiday Cookie Walk
I love Christmas and everything that comes with it, from blow-up lighted lawn Santas to handmade wreaths sprigged with berries and pine cones. I have a few favorite Christmasy things that make me feel all warm and happy just doing them. One of them is to bake cookies and give them away.
ARTICLES SHOW ALNA CITIZENS’ CARE FOR COMMUNITY
The editorial pages are full again this week with letters from citizens of Alna, who will vote Dec. 14 on proposed changes to the select board structure. I received 40 letters since September related to this vote, 30 just in the last two weeks.

SHOP LOCAL EVERY DAY
I missed Small Business Saturday this year because I spent Thanksgiving in Montreal celebrating my oldest kid’s graduation from McGill. The fourth Thursday in November is not a holiday in Canada, but I was thankful just the same, watching him cross the stage in the Place des Arts to receive the degrees he worked so hard to earn.
