Letting in the light: “We had an amazing tour of the window restoration work this morning,” was the first line of an email I received from Lincoln Theater Executive Director Andrew Fenniman on Wednesday, Feb. 22. He and theater board member Ted Silar had just come from visiting Bagala Window Works in Westbrook to see the progress on the restoration of seven of Lincoln Theater’s 14-foot-tall windows. I visited Fenniman at the Damariscotta theater the following day to chat about the project.
Review: Polly Peckenham Show Is Interesting but Uneven
Local artist Polly Peckenham’s show of what appear to be linocut prints, along with several color photographs, on the walls of the cafe at Damariscotta’s Rising Tide Community Market is definitely worth a good, long look over a bowl of hot soup or a cup of organic coffee. Her prints, which are not labeled as to their technique, are eye-pleasing. Some are one-color prints and others feature two or more colors, a testament to Peckenham’s skill at printmaking.

Flying Seeds video release: I recently sat down with local musician and empathic healer Emily Sabino to chat about the new video that she and her husband, multi-instrumentalist Lenin Sabino, released on Valentine’s Day. Emily’s mother, as many readers may know, is Newcastle painter Jane Dahmen.
Review: GSB Student Art Show at Skidompha Is a Hit
The Carey Gallery at Skidompha Public Library can be counted on for hosting excellent art shows – and the current show on its walls is no exception. The exhibit, which runs through Tuesday, Feb. 28, features the artwork of a number of seventh- and eighth-graders attending Great Salt Bay Community School in Damariscotta.

The artist in winter: Walpole oil painter Susan Bartlett Rice currently has a lovely exhibit of 10 of her winter paintings on display at the Bristol Area Library. A mixture of landscape and wildlife paintings, the cheery show brightens the section of the library where it hangs.

World of watercolor: I recently had the pleasure of spending time with Damariscotta painter Jan Kilburn, whose eponymously named gallery is part of the four Bristol Road Galleries. Kilburn’s gallery, which is attached to the front of her house, is a well-lit space that is loaded with Kilburn’s lovely watercolor paintings, giclees, and prints of mostly Midcoast landscapes, many of those Monhegan Island scenes. It is the same space in which Kilburn teaches Monday-morning painting classes from 9 a.m. to noon.

Learning to paint: I received an email from a reader after I mentioned in this column that talented Damariscotta artist Will Kefauver gives painting lessons, asking that I include more information in the future about other local artists that offer lessons. This column is going to do just that.

Review: ‘Snow Fence’ Show at Carey Gallery is Small and Delightful
The Carey Gallery, the little art gallery at the rear of Skidompha Public Library in Damariscotta, is currently hosting an intriguing little art show consisting of seven collaborative paintings by South Bristol artist Joy Vaughan and Newcastle artist Katharina Keoughan. Aptly titled “Snow Fence Paintings,” this show features paintings that have their genesis in pieces of bright-orange plastic snow fence.

Watershed connections: As readers may have heard, Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, at 19 Brick Hill Road in Newcastle, was recently awarded a $35,000 Art Works: Creativity Connects grant to support a series of public programs in collaboration with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension. I recently asked Claire Brassil, Watershed’s program and marketing coordinator, to elaborate on what the grant means for the center in 2017.
