Greeting dear readers! Your “Marilyn Beane’s World” is back on another week’s journey. Would you like to travel with me? I’m sure you do. So come along and I will have news from my home at Windward Gardens in Camden.
Newcastle History Christmas Trees
Christmas will soon be here. I already have my tree. We have a nice grove of fir trees up near our cottage and I cut one to bring home before the snow closes our road.
Characters of the County: Living Locally with Mike Trask
Born in Damariscotta and raised in Alna, Alna Fire Chief Mike Trask has quietly devoted more than half his life to the service of his hometown. Within the past year, he celebrated the 30th anniversary of his election as Alna’s fire chief and he returned to public office, beginning his second tenure as the town’s road commissioner.
Round Pond
Well, one holiday down and two to go. Turkey day is pretty much my favorite, or maybe it is the next day with all of the leftovers!
THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR
Despite the holiday lights, winter in Maine can truly be a depressing time of year. Between the biting chill in the wind and the darkness that falls around 4 p.m., it’s natural to want to bunker down and wait out the season.

Damariscotta History The True Meaning of Thanksgiving
Good morning, America. I start this article with a few words of wisdom. This will be my 88th Thanksgiving here in our great nation. I have had the honor and privilege to see our great nation step up and defend the freedom of our nation and world.
THE TRUE MEANING
Finding a new angle for an editorial about Thanksgiving proved to be a challenge this week.
Characters of the County: Allison Lakin and Neal Foley’s Life and Love in Cheese
In 2015, Allison Lakin was busy establishing herself as a Maine cheesemaker, without yet having a herd of dairy cows to call her own. Neal Foley, a trained farmer and chef, had recently returned home to New England and was in between farms. When the two met that year at a pig roast in Appleton, it was clear their goals aligned.
Henry, A Dog’s Life in Maine
Hello to all my friends. It’s almost Halloween as I write this article. I like to get a head start. As you can imagine, I have been very busy barking at the turkeys and crows that show up in our yard every morning and afternoon. Mom takes us for walks, and I go to day care once a week. I love seeing all my friends. I even got myself all painted up (literally, at day care.) We had a lot of fun.
Skidompha Skoop
Hello, friends!
Round Pond
The harbor now has more empty mooring balls than boats. It is emptying out fast. Most lobster boats that I see coming into the harbor are carrying traps that are being taken up for the winter. The picture above was taken on a very calm Monday morning walk.
HERE COME THE HOLIDAYS
For most Americans, the holiday season is the busiest time of year. All the visiting and traveling and shopping and cooking – all of that has to be squeezed into the same 24-hour day we use for the rest of the year and, frankly, life can get hectic.
