“It all came about because I had my girlfriends come up and they stayed in the apartment. They thought it would be so perfect for a writers retreat,” said Amy Kefauver in a recent interview at the Barn Loft Apartment, which is attached to the Damariscotta home she shares with her husband, artist Will Kefauver. Amy Kefauver was referring to the two upcoming writers workshops she will host at the spacious, recently renovated three-bedroom apartment in October and November.
Review: Damariscotta Artist’s Work Tackles Serious Environmental Issues
Marnie Sinclair has five grandchildren. They are the Damariscotta artist’s prime motivation for the environmentally focused work she has been creating since 2010. One such piece – a 3-D mixed-media construction titled “Acidification” – draws attention to the fact that an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide is decimating the world’s coral reefs. Another piece, “Earth Nest,” features a photograph of her 6-year-old granddaughter Winnie as a baby, cradled in a nest constructed of wire and driftwood. The piece’s description card on the wall in her Bristol Road studio-gallery refers to “yet another oil spill … soiling our nest.”

Review: Horst Show Captures Beauty of Buildings, Plant Life
Damariscotta watercolorist Kathleen Horst’s appealing art exhibit titled “Painting Damariscotta and the Midcoast” gives one a good reason to visit the local hospital without being sick or visiting someone who is sick. The sizable show, which runs through Thursday, Sept. 8, is on display in the Hall Gallery in the main hallway of LincolnHealth – Miles Campus, at 35 Miles St., Damariscotta.
Review: Damariscotta-Newcastle ArtWalk: Three Down, Two to Go
The third of five 2016 Damariscotta-Newcastle ArtWalks took place on Friday, Aug. 19. The ArtWalk – in its fourth year – offers attendees 17 stops at which they can peruse some of the abundance of high-caliber art that the Twin Villages area has to offer. Sixteen of those stops are in Damariscotta and one, The Lincoln Home, is in Newcastle. Some of the venues, which are listed on the ArtWalk maps available in stores throughout Newcastle and Damariscotta, offer music and/or light snacks and beverages. Artists are on hand at a number of the venues as well. ArtWalk attendees can visit as many or as few venues as desired, and venues can, of course, be visited in any order, even though they are numbered.

Lincoln Theater Reopens Historic Stairs at Annual Meeting
Approximately 150 people turned out at the Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta on Thursday evening, Aug. 11 – members and nonmembers alike – for the theater’s annual meeting. Guests arrived via the newly reopened, smartly lit, grand old staircase at the venue’s Theater Street entrance.
Review: A Lot to Like at Kefauver ‘Rock ‘N’ Wave’ Exhibit
The Saturday, Aug. 6 opening reception for the “Rock ‘n’ Wave” show currently on the walls of the Kefauver Studio & Gallery in Damariscotta was a well-attended affair. Artists and other community members turned out for the eye-pleasing exhibit featuring the artwork of oil painter and gallery owner Will Kefauver and 19 guest artists, all focused on depicting the area where the ocean and the land meet one another.

Damariscotta Hair Salon Has New Owner, New Name
A change has taken place at the busy little hair salon tucked into the Elm Street Plaza shopping center in Damariscotta. Formerly called Shelley’s Shortcuts, after former owner Shelley Collamore, the salon has been renamed Hair … We Are! by its new owner, Ivette Segovia, who bought it from Collamore in late June. Segovia worked at the salon as a stylist for a year and a half before taking ownership of the business.
Review: Helen Warner Nature Art at New PWA Office
The nature-focused paintings – oils and watercolors – of Newcastle artist Helen Warner currently grace the walls of two rooms at the new Pemaquid Watershed Association office in Damariscotta. The organization’s conference room contains her oil paintings, plus a couple of watercolors; the other – with more light coming in the windows – features watercolor paintings exclusively.
Artist William Wegman Attracts Capacity Crowd
It was a full house at the Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta the evening of Thursday, July 14. In fact, Andrew Fenniman, the theater’s executive director, announced just prior to the beginning of the Talking Art in Maine: Intimate Conversations event, hosted by Newcastle artist Jane Dahmen, that he had to turn people away. “We hit the fire limit,” he said.
One-Night Steadman Retrospective at Lincoln Home
For one evening only – Friday, July 15 – The Lincoln Home in Newcastle played host to a 46-year retrospective of the colorful paintings of Damariscotta artist Polly Steadman. The occasion was the second Damariscotta-Newcastle ArtWalk of the year and Steadman was on hand at the event to mingle with Lincoln Home residents and other ArtWalk attendees snacking on hors d’oeuvres, sipping wine, and asking questions about her artistic process.
Salad Days Attendance Best Ever Despite Wet Weather
Chilly, damp weather did not deter the hundreds of people who turned out for the 22nd annual Salad Days celebration on Saturday, July 9 at the Watershed Center for the Arts, located on an expansive, bucolic property in Newcastle.
