John Gorka illuminates with his trademark wordplay, twisting, turning, and tying words and phrases in the way a balloon artist creates complex creatures from simple balloons. Few contemporary songwriters coax language as deftly as Gorka. Rolling Stone magazine has called Gorka “the leading singer-songwriter of the New Folk movement.” On Friday, Sept. 23, he will perform at the historic Opera House at Boothbay Harbor, 86 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor.
Review: Horst Show Captures Beauty of Buildings, Plant Life
Damariscotta watercolorist Kathleen Horst’s appealing art exhibit titled “Painting Damariscotta and the Midcoast” gives one a good reason to visit the local hospital without being sick or visiting someone who is sick. The sizable show, which runs through Thursday, Sept. 8, is on display in the Hall Gallery in the main hallway of LincolnHealth – Miles Campus, at 35 Miles St., Damariscotta.
Sharpie Fashion Contest
Salt Bay Art Supply, at 458 Main St. in Damariscotta, is announcing the first in a series of contests using the ubiquitous Sharpie marker. This contest invites submissions using Sharpies on clothing, a wallet, shoes, a handbag, a hat, sunglasses, a watchband, or a belt, or anything else that would be considered wearable fashion.
Review: Damariscotta-Newcastle ArtWalk: Three Down, Two to Go
The third of five 2016 Damariscotta-Newcastle ArtWalks took place on Friday, Aug. 19. The ArtWalk – in its fourth year – offers attendees 17 stops at which they can peruse some of the abundance of high-caliber art that the Twin Villages area has to offer. Sixteen of those stops are in Damariscotta and one, The Lincoln Home, is in Newcastle. Some of the venues, which are listed on the ArtWalk maps available in stores throughout Newcastle and Damariscotta, offer music and/or light snacks and beverages. Artists are on hand at a number of the venues as well. ArtWalk attendees can visit as many or as few venues as desired, and venues can, of course, be visited in any order, even though they are numbered.
River Arts Call to Artists
River Arts in Damariscotta is inviting artists throughout Maine to submit artwork for jurying in its upcoming exhibition, Fall/Harvest. Artists can submit up to three works in any medium including sculpture, photography, collage, painting, ceramics, and fine craft – representational or abstract. Work can be delivered anytime during gallery hours until the deadline, which is Saturday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. The exhibition will hang Sept. 9-Oct. 1; an opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9.
Ronald Wilson Photos at Heywood
The Heywood Gallery, 921 Main St., Waldoboro is excited to host Ronald Wilson, award-winning landscape photographer, with the exhibition Chasing the Light, from Quoddy Head to Cape Neddick. The show will run from Friday-Sunday, Sept. 9-11, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, and during ArtWalk Waldoboro on Saturday, Sept 10, from 4–7 p.m.

Grand-Opening Reception at South Bristol Gallery
The public is invited to a grand-opening reception at the newly opened South Bristol Fine Art & Antiques Gallery from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 22. Located just after the newly completed South Bristol Gut Bridge, the newly renovated gallery is showcasing original art by Susan Tilton Pecora, Kimberly Skillin Traina, Robert Shetterly, Gale Page, Brad Betts, Kerri Parkinson, Sally Loughridge, Steve Busch, Mark Chesebro, and Evelyn Frye. The gallery also contains a few splendid pieces of early American furniture and oriental rugs, supplied by Foreside Antiques of Falmouth.
Review: A Lot to Like at Kefauver ‘Rock ‘N’ Wave’ Exhibit
The Saturday, Aug. 6 opening reception for the “Rock ‘n’ Wave” show currently on the walls of the Kefauver Studio & Gallery in Damariscotta was a well-attended affair. Artists and other community members turned out for the eye-pleasing exhibit featuring the artwork of oil painter and gallery owner Will Kefauver and 19 guest artists, all focused on depicting the area where the ocean and the land meet one another.
Allen Exhibit to Open at PWA Office Gallery
Starting Monday, Aug. 15, the Pemaquid Watershed Association’s office gallery at 584 Main St., Damariscotta will feature a show by Bath artist Pamela A. Allen called Mainely Color Play. The exhibit of watercolors will run through Friday, Sept. 30. A reception will be held for the artist on from 4:30-5:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 19 at the PWA office as part of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Twin Villages ArtWalk. The public is invited to this wine-and-cheese reception for Allen.

Review: Helen Warner Nature Art at New PWA Office
The nature-focused paintings – oils and watercolors – of Newcastle artist Helen Warner currently grace the walls of two rooms at the new Pemaquid Watershed Association office in Damariscotta. The organization’s conference room contains her oil paintings, plus a couple of watercolors; the other – with more light coming in the windows – features watercolor paintings exclusively.
