Kristi Favaloro, children’s librarian, here. It is my absolute delight to fill in and write this week’s letter to you all.
In Nature The Only Squirrel I Saw This Summer
My backyard is a shady, little, flat place; mostly covered with fallen leaves and moss. I often dally by the window to check on the wildlife and enjoy the trees and the little brook.
Characters of the County: Dave Kramer’s Story in the Sky
The lucky few know exactly what they want to be when they grow up. For Nobleboro resident Col. Dave Kramer, a retired, decorated U.S. Air Force officer and founding member of the Bates College soccer team, he never imagined that he would go from building model planes as a child to flying them as an adult.
Marilyn Beane’s World
Greetings, dear readers! I am your “Marilyn Beane’s World” columnist, back on another week’s journey. I’m not sure where it will take us. But join me and I will share my news from my home at Windward Gardens, in Camden.
Bringing Food Home Applesauce Time!
Anyone who has been reading this column over the past few weeks has probably noticed a theme. Apples, apples, apples!
Whitefield
“It is rare for people to be asked the question which puts them squarely in front of themselves” – John Proctor, “The Crucible.”
Characters of the County: To the Point with Jim Hazell
Fitting in is something Jim Hazell, the enthusiastic, affable Bristol Parks and Recreation employee and maple syrup maker, has done so well in the area that people assume he’s always been in Lincoln County. In a spiritual sense, Hazell may have, but physically, the former Marblehead, Mass. police officer and award-winning Realtor has only been in Bristol since 2015.
Thrifty Good Food Pork Chops and Madeleines
The ghouls and goblins have fled until the next year, leaving us bereft of their elusive whimsy of shape and excitement as fall fades in November. October has lingered with colors slowly fading, but after a couple of days of Indian summer, chill has come here to stay and we turn to the warmth of indoors.
Damariscotta History The Wonderful Flavor of Fall Vegetables and Fruits
The changing of another season has started. Halloween has past but the joy of fresh picked apples and the wonderful taste of fresh apple cider pressed on nearby apple orchards cannot be beat for its freshness and flavor.
Characters of the County: Gary Stone: A Man About Town
Whether Gary Stone is on his daily run along the roads of Newcastle and Damariscotta, at a community fundraiser or event, or walking into downtown Damariscotta on his lunch break, he’s a man about town who is all about community.
News Along the Way Lessons from a Garden
I started gardening with my mother when I was about 3 years old. There has always been a bit of a magical allure to putting a tiny little seed snugly in the dirt, giving it a little bit of water occasionally and watching a beautiful, green leafy plant unfurl from that seed.
Art, Actually What To Do Now
Here are the quiet months. Ice cream shops are closed. First Fridays and Final Thursdays are over.
What’s At The Waldo?
There is something truly inspirational about singing in harmony with a group of people, which may explain why it has lengthy historical and broad cultural roots as well. Some of my favorite high school memories come from singing in the chorus. I’ve got friends who’ve had similar experiences singing at church.
Characters of the County: The Remarkable Friendship of Holly Zeller
The forces of nature around Lincoln County include snowstorms, Damariscotta’s Pumpkinfest and Regatta, and at one point, glaciers. That list wouldn’t be complete, however, without the addition of Holly Zeller, a medaling extreme sports enthusiast, creator of an informal fashion contest, and Linaca Music Festival Host, with a fearless knack for making friends.
