Folks, it’s a historic time in our country, for sure. Hard to believe: Only three times in the history of our country have we impeached a president, yet it’s happened twice in the last 20 or so years. What’s different this time from back in the ’90s, with President Clinton? I would dare say much.

The “12 Days of Christmas” certainly had their appeal in the Middle Ages, with an extended period of celebrations with food and revelry starting on Christmas Day. When Charles Dickens published his “A Christmas Carol” in 1843, he was concerned that this custom was fading from England and gave it a boost for years to come.

The art of decorating the White House for Christmas: Of the 8,000-plus people from 50 U.S. states who applied for the job of volunteer decorator at the White House this past Christmas season, only 225 people (from all 50 states) were chosen. Among them was Shirley McLaren, a retired nurse from Waldoboro, who traveled to Washington, D.C. for the period of Nov. 25-27 to help decorate dozens of Christmas trees with more than 2,500 strings of lights, among other things that she did.

Backyard Wildlife Composting

If you’re looking for a way to lower your impact on the environment, consider composting. If you already compost, you can expand what you choose to divert from the garbage. For those unfamiliar with the term, composting is the recycling of organic materials. Backyard gardeners and farmers often compost, as they use the final product on their gardens. I also compost because I want to reduce what I throw out.

Mobius magic at Miles: Last Thursday afternoon, Dec. 19, I had the pleasure of spending time in the art studio downstairs at River Arts in Damariscotta talking with and watching the artists in the Mobius Inc. Creative Expressions program.

I have always admired people who knew what they wanted to do from a young age. In my youth, my choices included astronaut, marine photographer, Air Force pilot, and a few other things I was even less-suited for. (Due to having a smidge of claustrophobia, all of those careers would have been disastrous.)
