Since the recent kerfuffle over a Whitefield hemp grower’s abandonment by its bank and insurer, much of the anger – from the grower and the public – has been misdirected at the bank and insurer. The real problem, as our public officials have correctly grasped, lies with our inept and sluggish federal government.
Thrifty Good Food October/Oktoberfest
It seems the month of October brings out our need for special celebrations across the world. The fall signals that the pleasures of summer are at an end and we must face the rigors of winter to come. Hence we have devised activities since ancient times to postpone contemplation of the approaching change.

Masterful work: Open since July, Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts’ new building in Edgecomb, the Joan Pearson Watkins House, houses an art gallery. Currently, the gallery is hosting an exhibit titled “Masters and Apprentices,” featuring the work of master basket, wood, blockprint, assemblage, and jewelry artists and their apprentices.

All the “dollar store” news in Wiscasset this year has met mostly the same response from our readers.
An Open Discussion About Pumpkinfest
Dear Damariscotta-Newcastle business owners and local residents:
Now that the 2019 Damariscotta Pumpkinfest is behind us and we are looking toward our 14th festival, we have realized that we cannot continue to operate as we have in the past. There were a number of very vocal individuals and businesses who were critical of the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest Committee’s decisions. The committee is hosting an open discussion about whether Pumpkinfest will survive and prosper and, if it does, what changes must be made.
Jefferson Column
This past week, we’ve heard the coyotes calling nearly every night. It’s eerie to hear them. Their howling breaks into the night silence, disrupting our slumber. They sound like they are just beyond the window.

Wanting to see less plastic: I like hanging out with Damariscotta artist Marnie Sinclair. Every so often, the enthusiastic Sinclair just pops up on my arts radar and we chit-chat about her latest project – always, it seems, focused on the environment.
Ask the Vet October is National Pet Wellness Month: If only they could talk
Good health is essential for a happy, comfortable, long life. Early detection of disease through wellness visits to your veterinarian help prevent disease. If symptoms of disease are already present, your veterinarian can help improve the quality and length of your pet’s life.
Paws for Thought
There are animals who come into our lives and remind us how lucky we are. Either they touch our hearts because they are so kind and are exactly what we didn’t know we needed in a companion, or they have an indomitable spirit that makes us want to be better humans because we see that no matter what happens to them, they never lose their enthusiasm for life.
SECOND CHANCES
We have a lot of self-righteousness in American society today. A lot of vindictiveness. A lot of outrage. Two things we seem to have in short supply are forgiveness and second chances.
Whitefield Library & Community Center News
Our first ever Author’s Corner, with Fred Lipp, a local award-winning author, was held on Saturday, Sept. 28. A longtime Whitefield resident, Fred shared his current book, “80-plus: Learning To Live Again,” a story about his 80th birthday, two Nigerian dwarf goats gifted by his daughter, and how they have impacted his life. Thank you, Fred and Kitty Lipp, for sharing your life stories and words of wisdom with us!
Tales from Hunter’s Landing It was worth the miles
The house was habitable, the furniture was in place, and the car and truck were registered in Maine. We were now full-fledged citizens of South Bristol.
Waste Watch
Have you seen any very large pumpkins? It’s that time of year. I hope you’ll have some fun with all the activities this week. At the station, our experience with pumpkins is usually after they’re rotten and smelly.
WELCOME
Dear Pumpkinfest visitors,
