It seems the month of October brings out our need for special celebrations across the world. The fall signals that the pleasures of summer are at an end and we must face the rigors of winter to come. Hence we have devised activities since ancient times to postpone contemplation of the approaching change.

This past week, we’ve heard the coyotes calling nearly every night. It’s eerie to hear them. Their howling breaks into the night silence, disrupting our slumber. They sound like they are just beyond the window.

Good health is essential for a happy, comfortable, long life. Early detection of disease through wellness visits to your veterinarian help prevent disease. If symptoms of disease are already present, your veterinarian can help improve the quality and length of your pet’s life.

There are animals who come into our lives and remind us how lucky we are. Either they touch our hearts because they are so kind and are exactly what we didn’t know we needed in a companion, or they have an indomitable spirit that makes us want to be better humans because we see that no matter what happens to them, they never lose their enthusiasm for life.

Our first ever Author’s Corner, with Fred Lipp, a local award-winning author, was held on Saturday, Sept. 28. A longtime Whitefield resident, Fred shared his current book, “80-plus: Learning To Live Again,” a story about his 80th birthday, two Nigerian dwarf goats gifted by his daughter, and how they have impacted his life. Thank you, Fred and Kitty Lipp, for sharing your life stories and words of wisdom with us! 

The house was habitable, the furniture was in place, and the car and truck were registered in Maine. We were now full-fledged citizens of South Bristol.

Have you seen any very large pumpkins? It’s that time of year. I hope you’ll have some fun with all the activities this week. At the station, our experience with pumpkins is usually after they’re rotten and smelly.
