William Hammer died Oct. 12, 2023 at his home in Nobleboro, after several falls that contributed to rapid decline. Bill was born in Scandia, Kan. on Oct. 8, 1937, and his lifelong frugal demeanor was a result of the Great Depression’s impact on Midwest farming families during the ‘30s and ‘40s. He learned not to ask for much and this quality persisted until his death.

Betsy Hurst Piper left us too early on Oct. 25, 2023 at her winter home in Spring Hill, Fla. John Cotter, her husband of nine years, and Rascal, a rescued Boston terrier mix, never left her side. Betsy had been courageously battling throat cancer since last year, before coming down with pneumonia and COVID.

Prescription Drug Disposal Day Cancelled
Due to the tragic events in Lewiston, and the ongoing Law Enforcement response, Maine CDC has cancelled National Prescription Drug Take Back Day for all Maine locations. The nation-wide event, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency, was set for Saturday, Oct. 28. No reschedule date has been set, but the next National Take Back Day will be held as usual in April.

Kristin Lynn Martin Turcotte went home to be with her lord and savior, Jesus Christ on Oct. 21, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Jefferson, into a Christian home on Nov. 6, 1972, to Charles M. Martin and Ann Hewett Martin. She attended Jefferson Village School from kindergarten to eighth grade and then went on to Medomak Valley High School where she graduated in 1990.
State Cross Country Championships Postponed
The State Cross Country championships scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28, has been postponed until the following Saturday, Nov. 4, due to the Lewiston shooting.
