Born and raised in the Midcoast, Jessica Simmons knows what makes Maine a great place to call home. Growing up in East Boothbay, Simmons spent a few years living out of state before inevitably returning home and starting a career at Hodgdon Yacht Services. Simmons currently resides in Edgecomb with her fiance and daughter.

We are almost through the month of August. As I sit here at my desk, the sun is shining brightly and the sky is full of white fluffy clouds and the hummingbird feeder has a large number of hummingbirds coming and going. I have now filled their feeder 16 times with sweet sugar water.

Rubber Ducky Race Results

The Old Bristol Historical Society’s Rubber Ducky Race went off without a hitch as the duckies were launched off the recently restored roof at the mill at Pemaquid Falls on Sunday, Aug. 13.

Shane Matthew Sykes, 33, of Warren, died after a brief illness on Aug. 9, 2023 at Pen Bay Medical Center. He was born in Bangor on June 16, 1990 to Gerald (Roy) and Cynthia (Hagar) Sykes. He was a lifetime resident of the Midcoast. Wherever he lived, he always called Bristol his home.

Bebe Ablon, born Betty Ann Epstein on May 28, 1938, in Dorchester, Mass., passed away peacefully on Aug. 24, 2023, at the age of 85, in Dallas, Texas. She was a vivacious, playful, tenacious, and progressive woman who will be deeply missed by the professional, social, and spiritual communities to which she contributed and belonged.

Gertie Dejean, 94 years and 11 months, of Newcastle, passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side at her home in Newcastle on Aug. 26, 2023.

Dorothy Shiminski passed away on Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, at the age of 94, in Brunswick. She was born in West Boylston, Mass., on July 6, 1929, to John Dennen Simpson and Eleanor (Day) Simpson.

Peggy A. Thiboutot, 76, of Cape Coral, Fla., formerly of Topsham, passed away at home on July 25, 2023, after a battle with cancer, surrounded by her husband Octave, son Darren Sr., and grandson Darren Jr.

Gerald C. Reed Jr., 73, died on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2023 at LincolnHealth’s Miles Campus. For most of his working life, he worked for Reed Forest Products. In later years, he was retired and took care of his rental properties.

Gene Warren Boothby, 86, of Bremen, passed away on the morning of Aug. 21, 2023 at St. Andrews Village, in Boothbay Harbor, after a period of declining health. He was born in Portland, at the Eye and Ear Hospital, on April 3, 1937, to the late Ann Elizabeth (Boucher) and Weston Chase Boothby.
