Alna resident Cathy Johnson first came to Maine when she was an undergraduate at Yale University in the early 1970s. The summer after her sophomore year, she took a job at Acadia National Park as a student conservation associate.
Newcastle History: The Dawn People
When Europeans first arrived in what is now Maine, they found the country already inhabited. The natives of Lincoln County were known as the Wabanaki, a word literally meaning “Fearless Ones” or “The Dawn People.” They had settled near the coast and were the first people to see the sun rise. They were also known as the Pemaquids.
FRESH START
Spring in Maine marks new beginnings. Leaves are now budding on trees and plants are emerging from their winter retreat. It is nice to see all of the new life on full display in the area.
Bringing Food Home Free Seedlings and Seeds
Are you interested in gardening this summer, but lack the resources to purchase seeds and seedlings? At Healthy Lincoln County, we have a program called Grow-A-Row for Hunger, where we offer free seeds, starts, and other materials for folks willing to grow an extra plant for our programs.
Thrifty Good Food Pasta Primavera and Chicken Paillard
Primavera in Italian means springtime and as designation for a recipe, means more colorful springtime fare for the table. The crabapple outside our kitchen window has burst into a pink cloud of blossoms, affirming that it is time to look for recipes that embody a seasonal change in the menu.
Characters of the County: Jackie Gifford is an Eggs-trovert
“Everyone knows me from the eggs,” Jackie Gifford said. “I go to dinner in the state of Maine and (people) come over to us at the table like ‘you’re the egg girl, right?’ My husband’s rolling his eyes going ‘Man, we can’t go anywhere without people knowing you.’”
Bringing Food Home A Visit to Uprooted Farm
Recently at the Healthy Lincoln County office, the team learned about an incredible farm in Waldoboro that not only accepts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Electronic Benefits Transfer benefits, but also has a senior farmshare program. I immediately wanted to learn more about the work that they were doing!
Energy Matters: Think About It!
According to a recent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration report, U.S. coastlines are likely to face an additional foot of rising seas over the next three decades. The report’s projections are particularly high for the Gulf Coast. If sea level rise along the eastern part of the Gulf Coast continues apace, it will match the high-end sea level forecast for 2050. NASA, too, reports seas rising at a rate exceeding even high-end forecasts at sites like Pensacola, Fla., and Dauphin Island, Ala.
LOCAL LEVEL
As we come up on the next round of annual town meetings for the year, a troubling development is brewing.
Characters Of The County: Nobleboro’s Deb Singer Helped Spark the Re-Use Revolution
Sustainability is a core value that Deb Singer has spent most of her life championing. In the early 2000s when the concept of eco-consciousness began to be embraced on a wider societal level and businesses began to look for ways to reduce their impact on the natural world, Singer found herself in the unique position to have a profound impact on the future of the planet.
END OF AN ERA (?)
We, like the entire village of Round Pond, are saddened to learn of King Ro Market’s imminent closure.
Round Pond
Debbie Mikulak is coordinating the grow-a-row program for Healthy Lincoln County as her required 40-hour volunteer project to complete her master gardener volunteer training. If you are a home gardener and wonder what you can do with all of those extra veggies from your garden, please consider donating them to the food hub at the Twin Villages Foodbank Farm. Any size donation is accepted.
Characters of the County: Kellie Peters is Fully Involved
When Kellie Peters gets involved, she gets all the way involved. The busier she is and the more complicated the project, the better she likes it.
