Coastal Rivers is offering a nature-based after-school program for kids ages 6 to 11 during the month of March at Coastal Rivers Salt Bay Farm. The program takes place daily from 3-5 p.m. in week-long sessions.

University of Maine’s Darling Marine Center is recruiting student researchers to contribute to a diversity of marine and environmental research projects this summer.

The hemlock woolly adelgid, a small, invasive aphid-like species, was introduced to the eastern United States in 1927. Native Northeastern U.S. hemlocks, like the eastern hemlock, show no resistance to the species and have been gravely impacted. As of 2020 the Maine Forest Service has established quarantines in nine counties that stretch from York to Hancock County. All of Lincoln County is under quarantine, which means that hemlocks may not be transported from the area.

In 1993, Damariscotta River Association, now a part of Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust, acquired the 71-acre property in South Bristol known as Plummer Point Preserve. Thirty years later, the purchase of the point’s 14-acre tip unifies the entire peninsula under Coastal Rivers’ care.

Heather Leslie, professor of marine science and director of the Darling Marine Center at the University of Maine, has been named a 2022 American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow, one of the highest honors in the scientific community.
