Brunswick artist Barbara Bean, a retired clinical social worker, spent a great deal of her pre-work years drawing. During her 30 years as a social worker, she encouraged children with developmental disabilities to draw as a means of self-expression. Since her retirement, Bean has been expressing herself in her home studio for many hours a day. Some of the beautiful results of her long hours indulging her passion for drawing – and painting – currently hang on the walls of Savory Maine Dining & Provisions in Damariscotta.

Mason on display: I had the pleasure of spending time recently with highly accomplished Nobleboro artist George Mason, who happens to be one of the founders of the fantastic Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Newcastle. Mason, who has a background in ceramic architectural tile, was readying dozens of his “relief tapestries,” as he calls his lovely, partially encaustic work, for his open house and studio sale coming up on July 15 and 22 in the huge, light-filled room of the beautifully renovated former church that he calls home.
ArtWalk Waldoboro Expands to Good Effect
ArtWalk Waldoboro kicked off for the season Saturday, July 8. Like last year’s ArtWalk, this year’s version features Philippe Guillerm Gallery, the Heywood Gallery, and Tidemark Gallery. But this year, some new stops have been added, most notably Valerie Greene Gallery and Long Winter Soap Co., which, by the looks (and fabulous smell) of it, seems to have mastered the art of soapmaking.

Process art at Shapers: Lil Garcia over at Shapers Fitness Gym in Damariscotta gave me a call the other day to tell me about the new art on the walls of the inviting little gym on School Street. Eight of Lise Aubry’s abstract pieces line the walls of the gym, giving gym-goers something colorful and intriguing to look at as they break a sweat on the treadmill or the elliptical trainer.
Review: ‘The Boat Show’ at Kefauver a Wealth of All Things Boat
“The Boat Show,” a themed art show that opened Friday, June 30 and runs through Sunday, July 23 at Kefauver Studio & Gallery in Damariscotta, is totally focused on boats and things having to do with boats, as the name of the show implies. It features 22 artists, including gallery owner and painter Will Kefauver.
Review: Michael Blaze Petan’s Art Pulls Back the Curtain on Rural Maine
Every once in a while, an artist comes along whose work captures something about the world in such a refreshing, enlightening way that one is forced to simply stop and look and just say “wow!” The paintings of Bremen artist Michael Blaze Petan fit into this exclusive category. Petan’s must-see “My Neck of the Woods” show currently hangs on the walls of the West Gallery at River Arts in Damariscotta through Wednesday, July 12.

Review: River Arts Member Show a Pleasingly Organized Feast
A feast of approximately 80 pieces of artwork – from photographs to paintings to pottery to assemblage pieces – populates the current member show at River Arts gallery in Damariscotta. While this may sound like a lot to digest – and, in a sense, it is – the number of pieces on display at the gallery is less than would have been displayed in the past, thanks to the keen organizational eye of Alice de Mauriac and her husband, Julio Sanchez-Banos, who began hanging all of the River Arts shows last fall.

Review: Printmaker and Painter R. Keith Rendall’s Art is Truly Fine
If one Googles the term “fine art,” one comes up with two definitions: 1) “creative art, especially visual art, whose products are to be appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual content,” and 2) “an activity requiring great skill or accomplishment.” The work of Wiscasset artist and master printmaker R. Keith Rendall qualifies as fine art on both accounts. His meticulous copper-plate etchings of landscapes are fascinating; his paintings are colorful, imaginative, and playful; and his massive woodcuts of wildlife are no less than stunningly beautiful.

McKane’s Maine: Talented Wiscasset filmmaker and musician Sumner McKane is accepting preorders for his forthcoming film, “Speedway Maine,” a 110-minute feature documentary due out July 1 that tells the story of more than 100 years of auto racing in Maine. The film features current footage from raceways around the state, and also “showcases scarcely seen films from the 1940s through the ’90s,” McKane said.
Review: Susan Bartlett Rice Show Gives Fans What They Love
The work of Walpole painter Susan Bartlett Rice is beautiful. In early 2017, Rice displayed a small collection of winter-inspired paintings at the Bristol Area Library. She currently has a fairly large exhibit of landscape and wildlife paintings on the walls of Savory Maine Dining & Provisions in Damariscotta. This is sure to delight her fans – and to create new fans for her lovely work.

Braley off Broadway: I chatted recently with Lincoln Academy Director of Communications and Community Engagement Jenny Mayher about the arts scene at Lincoln Academy, and she eagerly told me about the success of LA drama teacher Griff Braley’s three-week-long Eagle Term class called “Just Off Broadway,” which wraps up Friday, June 9.
