This October, fifth and sixth graders from Great Salt Bay Community School participated in field trips to Twin Villages Foodbank Farm, where they harvested fresh food, rain or shine, and cooked with FARMS at the Y.

In honor of Veterans Day, members of the Old Bristol Garden Club recently held a workday at the Blue Star Memorial in Newcastle, which is located just past the Damariscotta exit of Route 1.

Medomak Valley Senior Citizens came together on Monday, Oct. 16, at the North Nobleboro Community Center, located at 554 Upper East Pond Road.

The Miles Memorial Hospital League is once again selling sets of blank holiday cards, the proceeds from which benefit LincolnHealth and the vital services it provides to this community. The cards, packaged in matching sets of eight with corresponding white envelopes, feature Maine-themed artwork donated by local artists including Julie Babb, Brenda Erickson, Peggy Farrell, Hannah Ineson, Julie Nixon, and Cheryl A. Young.

On the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 15, the Outdoor Club from Medomak Valley High School met at Ayer Park for a canoe trip.

Zachary Hanna, of Damariscotta, recently completed U. S. Army basic combat training at Fort Moore, Ga.

Thirteen students from the Center for Teaching and Learning in Edgecomb had their writing published in the most recent issue of EPOCH, a creative magazine developed by Skidompha Public Library and edited by local teens.

Grades 3-4 have begun weekly field trips to the Darling Marine Center to learn about the ocean and what’s in it. On their first visit they learned that the Damariscotta River is “brackish,” which means it has a combination of saltwater and fresh water. They also received a tour of the center and got to investigate a variety of creatures in touch tanks.

In what has become annual tradition, on Oct. 3 staff and volunteers from over a dozen local businesses and organizations spent the afternoon picking up trash along the shoreline of the Damariscotta River.

Apple picking was on the schedule for kindergarten students at Nobleboro Central School when they took a field trip to an area orchard last month.

The Villages of Light Committee is in search of volunteers to help make this year’s event a success.

The Newcastle Ecumenical Food Pantry asks for support for the Thanksgiving basket initiative as usual this year, but the pantry is so much more than the 300 Thanksgiving baskets it expects to give out this year.
