The Lincoln County News is pleased to welcome reporter Evan Houk back to the Damariscotta-Newcastle beat this week. Bisi Cameron Yee also returns to cover Nobleboro, and community and arts features after her professional development sabbatical that began in January.
Damariscotta History Events That Took Place in the First Two Weeks of July 1948
The old saying “time and tides wait for no one” is so true in many ways. I also find it very interesting to turn the pages back in time and see the many changes that have taken place here in Damariscotta since I was still a young boy in grammar school.
Characters of the County: Sue of the Seabirds
She sat nested among replica birds, rows of plastic eggs arranged on dowels. She wore a paint-splattered sweatshirt, its patterns like the unique markings of an egg. It was oddly quiet for a room full of birds, the walls busy with imagined life: Plastic bodies painted to look like common terns, albatross, other species, tucked in around the paint cans. A row of puffins painted rainbow “for inclusivity,” she said. Photographs and notes pinned to a large cork board, echoing in images the birds around them.
Damariscotta, I Hardly Knew Ya
When I arrived in Lincoln County some 10-and-a-half months ago, I was, as every 20-something is when they arrive anywhere, still figuring things out.
Characters of the County: Dick Chadwick Closes Up Shop in Nobleboro

Truck’n in America
Boy, have I got some stories this week. First, let me tell you about a trip I just took to Beantown. So, I get a call from my friend Randall and he says, “Hey Larry, want to go to a Celtics game and a Bruins game next week, Sunday and Monday?” I’m thinking well? And then he says, “I got some free tickets and Bobby’s going with us.” That being my partner on “Wuzzup,” the Mayor of the Mills, Bobby at the Mill Pond Inn, who is without a doubt, hockey nuts. So now the answer is, of course I’ll go!
EDITORIAL DISCRETION
We say farewell and thanks to reporter Nate Poole, who will finish up his time with the paper next week. Nate is headed back to UMaine in Orono for a position in the admissions office and to be closer to loved ones.
Paws for Thought
National Ferret Appreciation Day is April 2. Of course, as a ferret lover, I think every day should be National Ferret Day, but I know not everyone agrees with me. Some of those disagreements come from misunderstandings about ferrets. I’ve heard everything from “they stink” to “they bite faces.” And while every person’s ferret experiences may be a little different, those who take the time to get to know a ferret will find them to be wonderful pets.
Characters of the County: Ceramicist Alison Evans, Cast By the Coast
Razor clams, urchins. Sea clams and giant snails. Round dinnerware glazed in the tones and character of ocean-worn shells, seaweeds, deep water, rich algae. Barnacles, periwinkles. And oysters, of course.

Midcoast Matters Water Unites
In a world where divide and conquer is an increasingly pervasive strategy, we need to celebrate those things that unite us. No matter your perspective, pretty much everyone should actively support clean water.
‘POET’S CORNER’: ARS POETICA
The editorial pages are once again full with your letters discussing Lincoln County concerns: Whitefield’s proposed electronic sign, demolition of a building in Damariscotta, broadband in Newcastle, PFAS contamination, local select board elections, and the importance of attending your upcoming town meetings.
Whitefield
Last Saturday, after a difficult week, I went to get some Kefir from Swallowtail Farm and return a book to the Whitefield Library. Before heading home I stopped at Sheepscot General Store to listen to Andrea share her experience hiking the mountains of Colorado with her family.
