Once again the flags are flying high and proud in the village for Memorial Day and the summer season. Thank you to B.J. for hanging them. He has a plan to get at least eight more so that they are hanging from most of the poles at both ends of the town.
Characters of the County: Preserving a ‘Special Way of Storytelling’
Newcastle resident Art Mayers is in the process of preserving videotaped oral histories detailing the lives of Lincoln County individuals and different local themes on his YouTube page.
Round Pond
After a very high wind microburst on Sunday, the old horse chestnut tree on the lawn of the house that Paul and Shari Cunningham used to own on Anchor Inn Road decided to give up the good fight and over it went. Luckily it fell across the road and not on the home.
Truckin’ in America
Well folks, got a good one for ya this week. Being like most men, I hate to shop. If I need something, I go buy it, and I’m done. I don’t need to look at 10 of a certain item to pick out the one I want!
Marilyn Beane’s World
Greetings, dear readers! Your “Marilyn Beane’s World” columnist is here with another week of news about my life at Windward Gardens in Camden.
Characters of the County: Powered by Positivity
Cortney Geyer still isn’t used to being referred to as an “entrepreneur.”
On the Pond
This week’s column may earn me the title of curmudgeon or just another environmentalist trying to take away all of the fun. I don’t believe I am either, though, admittedly, as I age, I am more easily irritated by things such as incessantly barking dogs, and as readers know, I do love to write about the health of Biscay Pond, the flora and fauna, and just life as a year round resident on Biscay.
Whitefield
A few years back I was able to experience dinner at a local Grange hall because of my participation in a summer program sponsored by Maine Agriculture in the Classroom.
Damariscotta History Gen. Grant Uncovered for 50th Year
The beauty of a late spring has arrived as we come to the middle of May. I so often say that one has to stop and take the time to look around one’s area to see and enjoy all the new life coming forth.
Paws for Thought
As an animal lover, knowing that an animal wants to spend time near me feels like the equivalent of winning the lottery. I’m that person who will go to a party and hang out with the dog. I’m far more comfortable around animals than humans, so if an animal chooses to spend time with me as opposed to other nearby humans, well, I can’t think of any greater honor.
Characters of the County: Dedicated to the Past and the Future
Nobleboro resident Laurie McBurnie has spent her life dedicated to both honoring the past and preparing children for the future.
Waste Watch Tires
The town of Jefferson had a community cleanup/pickup weekend recently. This effort was coordinated by Joan Jackson. Many thanks are owed to her for her time and effort. Because of her dedication to this project, many people participated in making their town a more beautiful and healthier location.
Thrifty Good Food Savory Muffins
“Do you know the muffin man, the muffin man, the muffin man …” starts the old nursery rhyme about a famous muffin baker in London. We do not know who he was and when he really lived, since the rhyme was first recorded in 1820 and muffins had been known long before that. Today they are a favorite breakfast food or snack and we usually think of them as a sweet treat. In Maine blueberry muffins are de rigeur, but other sweet flavors including chocolate chips abound.
Characters of the County: Product of the Medomak
Zak Melvin looks like he could be a member of one of his favorite rock bands. But he’s not. He’s an educator and a clammer, both in equal measure.
