Two of the eight stories on our front page are dedicated to the turnover of ownership in two downtown Damariscotta cornerstones, King Eider’s Pub and S. Fernald’s Country Store. While this sentiment may seem strange, we’re choosing to see this as good news for the community for a few reasons.
Skidompha Skoop
We are excited to share the news that Skidompha will become a temporary COVID testing site starting this week. This service will be offered to the community through the fall.
Paws for Thought
As I have become busier, I have found myself adding to my list of employees. With the busier list of dates I need to be gone, the two awesome ladies who work for me sometimes take on jobs that I would be happy to do myself, but don’t have the availability in my schedule for.
Characters of the County: Shark Stories Stir the Memories for Retired Lobsterman Brian Sawyer
The story of a shark attacking a seal off Pemaquid Point earlier in July caused little alarm but prompted a great deal of interest among local readers. New Harbor native Brian Sawyer took a particular interest, having played a role in a shark story that made the front page of The Lincoln County News in 1961.
Bringing Food Home Raising Chickens and Donating Eggs
In 2018, an estimated 10 million American households had chickens. During the pandemic, that number likely grew as more Americans decided to join the local food movement. The benefits of keeping backyard chickens are obvious. From fresh eggs to a newfound pet, chickens are highly entertaining and engaging creatures. I would know. I currently have eight.
LEND A HAND
We all need to pay attention to the alarming situation unfolding in Whitefield right now.
Newcastle History Trinket Joe Leighton
Newcastle has been blessed with pictures. Besides the many thousands of photos taken by Ivan Flye and the old pictures of the area he bought at his Pictorial Studio in center Newcastle from about 1945 to 1985 there are the more than 3000 glass negatives of this area that were taken by E. Joseph Leighton between 1900 and 1930.
Characters of the County: Brandon Simmons’ Passion for Filming Grows with Experience
Armed with just a cell phone camera from the bleachers, Brandon Simmons started filming races at the Wiscasset Speedway during the 2012 season. Inspired by racing videos he saw on YouTube, Simmons created his own channel to post videos.
Truck’n in America
Well folks, another Fourth of July in the books so to speak. As we look back and think about our Independence Day here in America, we need to be grateful for our freedoms.
Whitefield
It’s been a while but summer in Whitefield seems as good a time as any to contribute a column, particularly with the return of the Fourth of July parade. In all honesty, with how things are going lately it didn’t feel like a time for celebrating but it’s been two years since Whitefield had their parade and I was curious to see what it was like.
Characters of the County: For Ed Harmon, It’s A Community Thing
Ed Harmon credits his grandmother for instilling in him a sense of community. Mary Ann Everett was a kind, powerful woman who loved children and worked hard, supporting herself cleaning homes for the well-to-do in Jamaica Plains, Mass.
In Nature Deer drama
There is a place near my house where does often hide their fawns. (No, you can’t hunt there – it’s too close to houses.) When a doe with hollow flanks and a bulging udder hangs around that area, we suspect that she has a fawn hidden nearby.
DRIVE SAFE
According to the calendar, we’ve been in summer since June 21. If one were to judge by the increase in traffic, however, this past weekend truly marked the start of the season.
Midcoast Matters New hope for hemlocks
When I think of my favorite forests, I think of hemlock stands. Of the dense canopy of delicate oval needles suspended by swooping boughs. Of the way the light dances and reflects off the foliage, casting intricate patterns below. Of the rich scent of the forest floor, barren except for a thick mat of needles and moss.
