Lawrence Herbert Machia, 80, of Damariscotta, formerly of Warren, passed away on the morning of Sept. 12, 2022 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta. Born on Dec. 12, 1941 in Barre, Vt., he was the son of Lawrence and Lorena Machia.

Richard A. Scheffler, 88, passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2022 at his home in Jefferson surrounded by his loving family. Rich was born on Dec. 29, 1933 in New York City the son of the late Alfred and Christine (Bauer) Scheffler.
Energy Matters Education: The Energy of Democracy
Whole societies once used slaves as their energy source. As recently as 1858, South Carolina Sen. James Henry Hammond championed the need for “a class to do the menial duties, to perform the drudgery of life. That is, a class requiring but a low order of intellect and but little skill.” Afraid of educated slaves, 19th century white Southerners made it a crime to teach slaves to read and write; and until the 1960s, southern Blacks and whites had to attend separate and unequal schools.
