Jackie Robinson is famous for breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball when he debuted for Branch Rickey’s Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Robinson’s story is inspiring and he is one of my favorite players, despite having played decades before I was born. Because of his fame, impact on the baseball world, and involvement in the civil rights movement, many people assume Jackie Robinson was the first Black player to play in the major leagues, but this is not true, though he certainly was the first in a long, long time.

LA Grads Organize Backyard Runathon to Benefit Local Businesses
Three Lincoln Academy cross-country alumni have organized a 24-hour Backyard Runathon to raise funds for Damariscotta-area businesses. Sam Russ, a 2019 graduate; Emma Allen, 2018; and Essie Martin, 2017, “came up with the idea when thinking of what we could do to support small businesses during the pandemic,” Martin said.

LA senior Tiger Cumming has loved baseball since he was four years old. Through the years he played T-ball, farm league, little league, middle school ball, Babe Ruth league, high school ball, and American Legion, and Amateur Athletic Union. He was the only ninth grader to make varsity his freshman year at LA. So when coronavirus ended his final baseball season before it started, it hit him hard.

There are several places to go mountain biking in Lincoln County. The best two choices are the Schmid Preserve in Edgecomb and Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson. In addition, Oxbow Brewing Co. in Newcastle offers a 1.5-mile blue-blazed mountain bike trail on hilly terrain.

The Wiscasset Community Center will be closing at noon on Monday, March 16 due to the coronavirus threat. Because they are a town run facility, the decision was made by town manager John O’Connell early on March 16.

The CLC YMCA announced on their website on Monday, March 16 that they will closing down. They currently plan to re-open on Sunday, March 29.
