Grace Wankmuller, of Newcastle and Jefferson, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, April 17, 2024 at Maine General Rehabilitation and Long Term Care at Glenridge Ridge in Augusta, just after celebrating her 87th birthday. Grace was born in Newark, N.J. to Peter and Alice (Shalvoy) Cunningham, the youngest of their three daughters.

After months of planning, students from Wiscasset Middle High School and Wiscasset Elementary School drove to the Opal Myrick School in East Millinocket to experience the total solar eclipse.
Woman’s Club Scholarship Available
The Waldoboro Woman’s Club Scholarship Committee is again offering $1,500 scholarships for graduating high school students in the Lincoln County area. This scholarship program is made possible by the club’s fundraising events throughout the year, including its largest fundraising event, the Whale of a Sale held in June.
Westport Island
Timber doodle. Bog sucker. Mud bat. I prefer Timber doodle. The “boring” name is American woodcock. A bird. An islander found her nest of four eggs and took a picture. Textbook pictures confirmed an evolving consensus that the mystery eggs belonged to a momma timber doodle. And as I was sitting on the deck playing her mating song from a Maine Audubon recording, I heard the melody answered from somewhere in the trees above. I think. “Peent” is how the birders spell the song and it sounds just like it sounds.
Regine Marie Winter
Regine Marie Winter, 93, Hobe Sound, Fla., formerly of Nobleboro, and Allendale, N.J., passed peacefully at her residence following a brief illness on March 30, 2024. Prior to her passing, two of her much loved surviving sons, Marc and Jacques (along with many relatives) were able to visit and comfort her in her final hours.
Eugene A. Reynolds April 17, 1931 - April 13, 2024
Eugene “Gene” Reynolds, age 92, of Georgetown, passed away on April 13, 2024 at his home. Born in Bath on April 17, 1931, to Alvah C. and Agnes M. (Powers) Reynolds. Gene was raised on the family farm in Georgetown and attended the Old Town Hall schoolhouse and graduated from Morse High School in 1950. Gene was a multi-sport athlete and a member of the National Honor Society.

Nicole Balant
Nicole Balant, 70, died peacefully in her home in Damariscotta on Saturday evening, April 13, 2024. She grew up in Chester County, Pa. and was a graduate of The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pa. She completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Bryn Mawr College and a master’s degree in technical writing at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. Over the years she built a career as a skilled freelance copy editor with a focus on academic works published by university presses.
