Marion MacKenney passed away peacefully, on the night of July 22, 2023, after years of struggling with dementia. Her beloved husband, Bob, was by her side, where he has stayed the last few years.
Charles Edwin Welles III Aug. 17, 1933 - June 12, 2023
Born on Aug. 17, 1933, in Troy, N.Y., Charles Edwin Welles III brought great joy to his father and mother, Charles and Mary V. Welles. As a young child, he lived with his parents in both Bennington, Vt., and in Bermuda. Sadly, at the tender age of 6, he lost his mother after she succumbed to pneumonia in 1938. Charles attended a Bennington one-room schoolhouse, The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, and the South Kent School in Connecticut, where he managed to graduate with grades sufficient to earn his admission to Yale College. During his teenage years, Charles gained a stepmother who loved him, Gertrude “Johnne” Talbot.

Great Weather, Large Turnout for 18th Annual Westport Island Shore Run
The 18th annual Westport Island Shore Run 10K Road Race took place on Sunday, Aug. 20 on bridge-accessible Westport Island. The weather was fantastic – cool temperatures under a clear, blue sky – for the 10K race and a 3.5-mile fun walk. The event had its biggest turnout ever, with more than 70 runners and walkers participating.

Jefferson Historical Society Open House Aug. 30
The Jefferson Historical Society will host another open house at the old Jefferson town house from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30. There are three floors of exhibits related to Jefferson’s history, plus the Bond family hearse and the original privy which had been attached to the building.
Finding Our Voices Funding Tops $100,000
More than $100,000 has been distributed from Finding Our Voices to bring safety, freedom, and comfort to Maine women and children survivors of domestic abuse through the group’s Get Out Stay Out Fund.

Live Edge Music Festival Tickets On Sale
Midcoast Conservancy will hold the 11th annual Live Edge music festival at Hidden Valley Nature Center from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. The fun-filled day of live music, great local food, and beer and wine will be set in the midst of 1,000 acres of trails, pond shore frontage, and bogs.

Thrifty Good Food Fresh Summer Flavors
Our rainy summer has yielded amazingly green lawns this August, lush gardens well populated with slugs, and bountiful crops of kale and Swiss chard. Sadly, corn, tomatoes, and even peppers and summer squash have lacked the usual heat of summer and are late in ripening.
