Family Retreat Day Rescheduled

Join Hearty Roots at Hidden Valley Nature Center on Monday, Feb. 21, for a morning filled with cross country skiing, fat tire biking, and exploring the trails with other local families. In the afternoon, kids play and learn with new friends while the parents and Hearty Roots staff chat fireside with hot drinks.

Eleanor “Ellee” Lee Simons, of Waldoboro and Florida, died Feb. 5, 2022 from complications of cancer and COVID-19. It wasn’t a long period for her illness and very sudden.

The old Deering and Hazel Genthner house finally gave up the ghost in last week’s rain and windstorm and collapsed in on itself. I don’t imagine that the blizzard last weekend did it any good either. When I was a little kid, it was always the beautiful place at the top of the hill. There will probably be a McMansion built there before we know it.

Katherine F. Norwood, 91, of South Bristol, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta. She was born on May 3, 1930 in South Bristol to Clifton and Fannie Poole. She grew up and attended school in South Bristol, and graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1948.

Merrick I. Beane, 90, of Nashua, N.H., and formerly of Warren, passed away peacefully at his home with his family on Jan. 25, 2022. He was born Nov. 22, 1931, to parents John Frank Beane and Eunice (Libby) Beane.

Jeff Bradbury Memorial Ice Fishing Derby

The second annual Jeff Bradbury Memorial Ice Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19. Tickets are available at Damariscotta Hardware, in Damariscotta, and at Louis Doe Home Center and Mail It 4U in Newcastle. Tickets will also be available the day of the derby from 8 to 9 a.m. at the state boat launch on Damariscotta Lake in Jefferson.

Midcoast Conservancy Accepts Land Donation in Memory of Nancy Duffy

In December 2021, Midcoast Conservancy accepted a generous donation of 45-acre Aranyani: Nancy Ellis Duffy Nature Preserve from Leonard Duffy, in memory of his wife, the late Nancy Duffy. The name Aranyani was chosen because she is an ancient Hindu goddess that animates and protects the forests and the animals that live within them.
